Hi Im 31 yrs old and Im soon going to be resurfaced (bilat) next

month.

I am scared and would really appreciate hearing from people around my

age (25-35) who have been resurfaced (or if you know any such person

could you pass me on their email). It will help me make the decisions

I need to make and my journey into the unknown a little less scary.

So here goes

1) How was it for you did you have good results, how long have you

been resurfaced, are you pleased you had it done.

2) How long did your recovery take, how long before you were off

crutches, how long before you could return to work

3) How did you go about recovering what kind of pysiotherapy did you

do / have

4) My sister says the strain on me with having a bilateral would be

too much, should I have a unilateral where I have both hips done

seperately and how long apart would I have them (3 months ?)

5) How can I best prepare for the surgery

6) Im being operated on by McMinn and I have been told he wants me to

avoid water for 6 weeks post op, I've been told hydrotherapy rocks,

so how do I get round this ?

7) If you could do anything differently what would it be ?

Thank You - Simon

Hi Simon

First of all I have to say that I only had my left hip done, but here

are plenty of people having had bilaterals.

I'm 33 years and had my op 17th of dec 2003 (3½ weeks ago). I to was

very worried and conserned how life would be after the op, but

getting on the 'other side' I don't regrett it. I was in hospital for

one week, but the very next day after the op, they had med walking

with a walkingtable. After 3 days I was on chrutches. The pain in the

joint was gone but replaced with heavy duty muscle pain. I can only

refere it to being kicked by a horse...Anyway, the leg felt

like 'ensteins' leg, I didn't have to much control over my

muscles. But on day 9 I was on one chrutch and now I only use it

outdoors. I still limp ofcourse. I'm not allowed to drive my car or

bike for 6 weeks after that I see my dr again and if everything seems

ok, the restrictions ar of. I havn't had any therapy other than my

own...lifting the leg flat and walk as much as I can. If there's

anything more I can help you with, don't hesitate to mail me.

Best regards

--- Simon,

I am 48, and only had one side done so I can't speak on

behalf of the bilaterals. I do want to commment on water therapy.

Its a great way to get range and motion and your leg to begin to get

the control back. I did it for a montth and loved it.

I will say the warmer the pool the greater the chance for bacterial

growth. The public pool I went to was 90 degrees and I didn't

start until the third week post op. I problably could have started a

bit earlier, however, leave no chance for bacteria to enter the

incision area. My rump roast was swollen pretty good so it took a bit

longer for the incision to completly seal over. At 8 wks strenght is

starting to come around. I still fight flexibility. I've allways

fought it. Good luck on your journey. Tug c+ 11/03 Boyd

Hi Simon,

Actually, I'm two yrs out the range given (I'm 37) and I have

unilateral (left) only, nonetheless, if I may, I'd like to say what I

would have done otherwise, had I could:

I would have definitely not waited (well, procrastinated due

fears) so long had I known . . .
