Seeking a lifestyle adjustment to manage your headaches is a fabulous idea. I

think that you will not only find that your headaches will decrease but also

other positive changes in your mood and overall attitude.

Exercise is a toughie for a lot of people. What helped me to change my attitude

about exercise was to weigh the risks of not exercising versus the benefits of

exercising regularly. And since I did a little research and some observations I

have really enjoyed exercising. I work as a social worker in a retirement

community; each and every day I see people who are 80 plus years old and the

difference between those who exercise regularly and those who don't is simply

phenomenal! Exercise may need yield immediate results regarding weight loss,

your heart will thank you for years to come.

Various issues and questions

First, sorry I've been silent these past couple of weeks. Work and

various projects have been keeping me busy. :)

Second, thanks to everyone who replied to me about my concerns regarding

my wife. It hasn't gotten any better for her. We have been going to the

same gym in the mornings for the past few months, and a couple of weeks

ago -- the day after I posted my message, actually -- she got so fed up

and upset that she pretty much stormed out of the gym, exclaiming " I'm

tired and this isn't working anyway. "

Earlier this week, I finally took myself to a neurologist to see if

there's anything I can do about the headaches I've been having all my

life. The neurologist has an approach to pain management that I've never

really seen in any other doctors: he manages pain by managing lifestyles.

In other words, he's more into good nutrition and exercise and meditation

(with occasional nutritional supplements) to manage pain rather than

piling on the medication. He gave me some ideas, and I took a class on

positive lifestyle changes and stress management from his nurse, and I'm

feeling really inspired (I'll also be learning about a pain management

technique called " neurobehavioral therapy " , similar to biofeedback, which

my mother had a lot of success with in treating her own headaches a few

years ago). So now I'm focusing even more on the nutrition side of

things: making sure I get my 7 to 9 fruits and veggies each day (that's

hard), avoiding the hydrogenated oils and refined sugars and so on. (The

doctor says it's too soon to see whether the headaches will respond to the

lifestyle changes and the therapy, and I might have to take more

medication later on -- but I'm hoping really hard that I can avoid that.)

My wife is trying to make the same changes, but mostly, I think, because I

am. I really wish she could feel better about herself. Today I finally

broke down and suggested that she consult a specialist and that she talk

to her doctor about finding one.

Someone asked about faith. Yes, my own faith keeps me going and helps me

out quite a bit (in a complicated way, but that's the result of my B. A.

in philosophy). My wife doesn't share my faith, but she's not

uncomfortable with it. It's just a resource that she isn't able to draw on.

Third, I'm doing some research into nutritional supplements. Has anyone

heard of a product called Juice Plus? If so, could you share some of what

you've discovered? If this is a controversial issue, then feel free to

e-mail me off-list.

I hope so. The doctor has also recommended (GASP!) cutting back on my

caffeine. Drinking only one or two cups a day instead of, say, the seven

or eight that I'm used to.

Ironically, with less caffeine, I find that I have more energy.

Especially since I have hypertension, and I'm hoping the exercise and

weight loss will bring that under control!
