Guest guest
Hello, I'm really confused about the waiting period. Following my mammogram in mid-March, my Dr. indicated she was concerned about the outcome; not a lump, but " clusters " in my left breast. I was immediately given the option of a needle biopsy or an excisional biopsy (in the hope of removing any malignancy at time of surgery). I chose the excisional and ultimately had to undergo a mastecomy because we didn't get a " clear " margin. I would certainly question the Dr. / insurance company rather than suffer through the wait! Best of luck. mgordon37 wrote: Hi, I'm currently in the same boat as you are. I have a lump on my left breast. In June I had a mammogram done and then an ultra sound. Guest guest
Eighty percent of lumps are not cancerous. HOWEVER I would not wait another 6 mo for a mammo. I would insist on an ultrasound. If need be change drs. You could always go to your hospital and ask for a referral to another dr. Are there any breast surgeons in your area? Its normal to be worried. Waiting is the absolute worst. Guest guest
If it were me, I would ask about an ultra-sound or digital mammo - or maybe you've already done that. With a family history of BC, I am surprised that they are waiting 6 months. On the other hand, if you had a mammo and they saw any kind of " mass " they would recommend going further. Did they insinuate that they thought it was a cyst?? I wouldn't wait. If your insurance covers it, try and get either an ultra-sound or a digital mammo. My opinion. Hope it all goes well and keep us posted. Guest guest
Hi. When I had my annual mammogram this past summer, they called me back for more views, and then told me that they needed to do an ultrasound. My breasts are still pretty dense. They decided that it was a cyst, but want me to come back in about six months. They said that they were being more cautious because of my high risk of breast cancer. If I go back and there is a negative change, they already said that they would want me to go for a biopsy. And that's when they now said that it's a cyst. So, I think that if there was a non-cyst lump, that they would want to do more than do another mammo in 6 months. I sat there waiting for them to tell me that there was a mass! I am pretty inexperienced in this, but if it's not a cyst, why are they waiting? Guest guest
Colleen-- I want to tell you my story. In Feb of this year, I had my annual ob/gyn appointment. Because I was 40, the doc told me it was time to go get a mammogram. I did and it came back suspicious. I then went for a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound. It also came back suspicious. However, the radiologist/surgeon told me (because it was BI-RADS 3) that normal protocol was to wait 6 months because I had only a 10% chance that it was malignant. I immediately said " No " . He then said that I could come back at 3 months if I wasn't comfortable with 6. I said OK, but the whole time he was talking, I kept thinking, " Somebody's got to be in the 10%! And it could be me! " I stopped him mid-sentence and told him that if it was cancer, I had to know now, not 3 or 6 months later, becuase I was a single mother of two elementary school aged girls and I help with my dad who is last stage Parkinson's. He set me up for a biopsy. It was cancer. On April 17th of this year I was diagnosed with Stage I infiltrating ductile carcinoma. Since that time, I have had a mastectomy, 4 rounds of chemo, a prophylactic mastectomy, and have begun reconstruction. If I had waited what was " normal protocol " , my treatment and prognosis would have been much different. I thank God every day that I listened to that voice that said, " Somebody's got to be in the 10%. " My suggestion to you is that you find out now. Why wait? If it isn't anything, you can mark it off your list of worries months before the end of the 6 month. If it is, you get a jumpstart on treatment and ridding your body of it. I hope everything goes well for you-- --- Colleen wrote: > Hi. Guest guest
/Colleen - I also had a suspicious mammogram and was told to wait 6 months - they found 4 micro calcifications along my chest wall - BI-RADS 3 - this even though my sister died of ductile carcinoma at age 56 - I am now 55 the same age she was diagnosed. I made an appt. with a surgeon for her to look at the films and discuss our next step; I am not going to wait the 6 months. If she doesn't suggest a biopsy I will. I have two grown daughters, both with daughters of their own and I want to catch this as early as possible if need be. Beth GXS Ph: Fax: Email: .@... Guest guest
Luckily for me, I think, the ultrasound and the additional views were able to clear up the area that had been questioned. It was quite interested to hear the detailed explanation by the radiologist of how they can tell if it's a mass. I forgot to mention this, and probably I forgot (perimenopause fuzzy thinking) until now - but, the radiologist did say that the only reason they wanted me back in 6 months was because of my history. Anyone else they would have not. I felt and do feel comfortable with that. Thanks for the thoughts. Guest guest
My surgeon said the same thing about my breasts after he did my partial mastecomy. " They look really good! " (Looking at both of them, trying to see how they matched up size-wise.) I just sat there in shock (and post-op pain), thinking, " Who cares what YOU think?
