Hi Joanne!

Operation Rainbow is a wonderdul organization. I have been on 3

missions with them to Nicaragua. I will be joining Dr Herzenberg this

summer on my 4th mission. Our's is a team of orthopedic surgeons,

nurses, anesthesiologists, therapists, and a few translator/auxillary

people like me.

The team of doctors and nurses do about 40+ surgeries over about 4

days, in a rural hospital in Esteli, which is about 3hrs north of

Managua. It's beautiful country, but very poor.

I have seen alot of clubfoot surgery there. It is mostly performed on

children 8,10,12 years old. These are children from the back country,

who's parents have begged borrowed and walked 6-8 hours with their

child, in the hopes of receiving treatment. The children arrive never

having had previous attention. They are either crawling or walking on

the tops of their feet with the soles facing up to the sky.

The only thing to do for them is to remove the talus and pin the

other bones to make a right angle stick figure like foot. It is rigid

and won't bend, but they can stand on it and walk and work and feed

their families and themseves.

It is a very worthwhile organization which dervies all it's funding

from private donation. It is something that I have been very proud

and gratified to volunteer for and be a part of.
