Guest guest
I read a book last year called " Alone in the Mainstream " written by a woman who was born with a hearing loss. I believe that she breifly spoke about this happening to her (or I'm confusing it with something else that I read). She would wake in the middle of the night and " hear " what she thought were people in the house. I also know a child who complained of hearing " noise " when there wasn't any around. That father had mentioned a book to me about it, but I can't remember it. I will see him next weekend and will ask about it. There has been a pretty bad cold going around our area (St. Louis) and for the past few days we have all had headaches including our daughter (7yo implanted with Clarion). Last night she woke up around 3 in the morning saying that she was hearing a clicking sound and humming sound " inside my head " . We asked her what it sounded like and she said it was like a " toy man " and she made some motions like a toy wind up soldier. Some men see things as they are and ask why. Guest guest
This is an interesting topic for me. Sam, my younger son (he's 11) has been complaining for the past month or so of an occasional " clicking " sound. I don't think it's happened during sleep - it seems to be during waking hours. Sam by the way is not implanted - he wears two hearing aids. We have an appointment with our audiologist next week to see if she can figure out what's going on. I've had Sam tracking the time of day it happens and what he's doing but there seems to be no pattern to it. It's weird... Several of my friends, including one with a CI, have experienced it too. It is tinnitus or ringing in the ear. I compare it to Chinese Water Torture because sometimes it is hard to sleep at night with that noise going on in the head. Guest guest
That sounds like a form of tinnitis to me. Some people hear a noise like trains, some hear music, some hear sequences of clicking. I've read that if the " sound " disappears when the CI is turned back on, that's a sure sign of tinnitis. Guest guest
<<Has anyone had their child say they are hearing sounds when their CI is off? >> Neal has actually said he hears sounds with his implant off a few times in the past month or so. I assumed it was tinnitus. I asked his audiologist about it and she agreed. I think tinnitus is often a more constant ringing in the ears, like I have in my deaf ear, but the audiologist said that sometimes deaf kids report it as being more sudden and brief, and definitely more likely to occur in extreme quiet. It makes Neal mad. He grabs his head and says, " Aaargh. Why is that stinkin' noise in my head. " The audiologist also said that that is a normal reaction to it. She said the best way to handle it is just to tell the kid what it is and explain that it's normal, etc. That was what I had already done with Neal, so I was kind of proud to have figured it out on my own. LOL. BTW: When Neal first heard it, he couldn't describe it very well. He said it was too weird to explain. But once he figured out how to make the sound, I could tell it was similar to the tinnitus I have. Guest guest
- do you ever hear it as a clicking sound or is it a high pitched whine? Curious re: Sam. Thanks! Guest guest
> Has anyone had their child say they are hearing sounds when their CI is > off? Could be Tinnitus (the name for ringing in the ears and head noises). JD gets that all the time. The only time it really seems to bother him is when he's testing in the sound booth. Lots of adults mention this, and I think it doesn't occur for us to ask our children about this at all. It wasn't till an adult mentioned to me that he wondered how many of the children had Tinnitus like he did....so I asked JD if he could hear things when his amplification was off and he knew he shouldn't be hearing it. It sort of surprised me when he answered yes - but then again, it did explain some of the things he had mentioned a few times through the years. -Kay

Guest guest
Thanks to all of you for your comments...I forwarded them to my wife as well to help ease her mind. She took to the ENT yesterday who did her implant. He checked her ears and thought she might have some fluid built up. He did say that he had seen the same thing before. Not sure if he mentioned tinnitus or not but that certainly makes sense. We are on our second implant (the first one failed) so we are extremely sensitive to problems. I always assume that eventually the thing will fail but I am hoping it won't be for several years. This is the same reason why we are having her take signing...just in case. Again thanks to all!
