I managed to trace both Dave Eddy and Dobson, who appear as

case studies on the MMT website. Both of them have responded very

quickly to my enquiries - see the text of their emails below.

They are both nine years on from their procedures and very active.

Dave is the current World Senior (Singles) badminton champion and

is still an active fell-runner.

I think their experience is longer than anybody's we have seen on the

site so far and their stories are very encouraging.

From Dobson:

Hello ,

What a surprise to learn about you and fellow iron men.

It is just coming up to nine years since Mr. McMinn resurrected my

life.

Within a week of the operation I was home and walking the dog. In

four weeks I was walking with the club in the Lake District. In three

months I was running again and I have not stopped since. With friends

I run six miles twice a week and twelve at weekends. Then there are

weekly walks over the Moors. And weight training in between. Physical

activity is my life.

There have been absolutely no problems.

I hope I have not bored you to tears with all this. But it is

impossible not to be excited when you remember how your life was

suddenly transformed from being a pathetic cripple who had been going

slowly down hill and enduring constant pain for several years until I

could barely walk - to being fit and and strong again.

No doubt others have enjoyed the same experience.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincere regards

Dobson

and from Dave Eddy:

Dear

My procedure was featured in the Watch Dog Health Section on TV and

also in McMinn's video.

Op 1994 - left only.

Prior to op could not tie shoe-laces or put on socks, fair amount of

discomfort, considerable difficulty in getting upright from sitting

position, could not play any sport properly (golf, tennis, squash,

badminton etc) and some not at all.

kept me in hospital for nearly 2 weeks to ensure no

complications such as blood clots

On leaving hospital worked religiously on progressively improving

mobility in the joint plus strengthening the muscles

Started in the hydrotherapy pool on regaining some mobility in the

hip then moved on to careful swimming

Progressed to gym work such as rowing, stepping machine, cycling and

eventually graduated on to 'proper' self-supporting exercises eg

stepups half-squats etc

I believe the KEY is to do 'exercises' regularly but PROGRESS VERY

CAREFULLY through the various stages being sure NOT to overtax /

overstrain the affected hip area but aiming over time to keep on

increasing the workload gradually and progressively

Walking unaided after 3-4weeks, back at work (sedentary) after 5

weeks, able to drive after 4 weeks

Playing Badminton (gently) after 6-8 weeks - playing properly after 2

months, back to 'normal' after 12 months

The flexibility in the hip continued to improve over 2-3 years - I

would assess it now as 90% of 'normal' (which is more than adequate

for day to day activities and does not in fact impede my Badminton)

Again the KEY is to move forward PROGRESSIVELY

I do not think about my affected hip at all during day to day

activities. Neither does it affect me adversely when playing Badminton

AFTER the op I won numerous National Veteran Titles and European

Titles and won Gold Medals at both the World Masters Games AND the

first ever World Seniors Badminton Championships making me the ONLY

World Singles Champion in the Country at any level !!

Good luck with the Club

McMinn is now one of my all-time heroes havng given me back my

quality of life 100%

Compliments of the Season

Regards

Dave Eddy

I will convey our thanks to Dave and and invite them to join.

Regards,

Vale

Thank you very much for contacting Dave and . It is so

important for us to hear how they brilliantly they are after 9 years.

I took the message from Dave, about continuing to exercise, very much

to heart - especially as I will be getting the second one done soon.

Thanks again.
