I'm 49, and my doctor also recommended a hysterectomy. She referred

me to an IR if I was interested in a UAE but was hesitant about it.

She advised strongly against a myomectomy as an unnecessary risk

since it's just a " baby-carrier " . From a female doctor no less!

(*sigh*)

I'm scheduled for a myomectomy with a different doctor on Feb 2, and

will post my experiences after.

Ironically, the older you are the less likely you are to have a

recurrence of fibroids, but the more likely you are to have a

hysterectomy recommended to you with recurrence cited as one of the

reasons for the surgery.

Thanks, Mindy.

My original gyno is a female also and that was her " attitude " also -- she

told me that the chances of my ever

conceiving again were very slim because of my age (44) and only offered me a

hysterectomy since my kids were

grown and I wouldn't be having any more kids. I know how you feel. Because

of a very bad marriage in the 80's,

I've never remarried...but some day, I'd always hoped to have one more

child, and I just couldn't accept parting

with my uterus. I've since learned from this group that the uterus is more

than a baby carrier and has many other

important functions. I was really disheartened when my RE agreed with her

diagnosis, which is why I am going

to seek a 3rd opinion.

I will be thinking about you and praying for you when you have your myo. I

wish you the best.

Hi ;

I am 48, and have seen five doctors so far in the past few months. I am really

not too keen on getting a hyst. either. My mother who is 78, was just diagnosed

with uterine cancer and had a hsyt. a couple of months ago. She is fine, they

got all the cancer.

I have had all the cancer tests, and have been told by these first four docs

that Hyst. is my only option, and that I will get cancer if I don't have one. I

was told my entire uterus was filled with fibroids and it was swollen to the

size of an 18 week pregnancy.

Last Friday I went to a fifth doctor who said I only had one fibroid (large

though) and that my uterus was not really that large as I had been previously

told.. He said I am a perfect candidate for UAE. For more info check out the

website www.ask4uae.com for a doctor in your area if you want to get another

opinion. I am probably going to do it.

I was scheduled for a hyst. Dec. 12 and canceled it right before because the

doctor (first one I saw) was pressuring and rushing me. I found out that she

moved away the next week and is buying a house! I am so glad I didn't go through

with it. I'm getting an MRI first to see if it would be possible, and I'll keep

you updated.

I think a lot of doctors believe women in their 40's " don't need a uterus " for

whatever reason.

Radiologists www.sirweb.org

Once you get there, take your pick of states and whether the doctor

does UAE/UFE or other procedures.

Since a professional organization runs www.sirweb.org and does have

some control over who is a member--this might be a better bet than a

site where the doctors may be paying just to be listed on it.
