Guest guest
Barb, This is heartening for me, since I'm also AB and since my CA-19-9 is going up. But I'm not listed yet. So far I'm doing well with normal symptoms. I too would feel it's too soon for a transplant, but given the cancer risk I'd probably go for it - the transplant. -Marie Reply-To: To: < >Subject: Ken's Phone CallDate: Mon, 9 Apr 2007 16:11:37 -0500 The transplant surgeon just called Ken. He said Ken was #2 in Region 4 and might be getting a call tonight!! They have a liver and are in the process of deciding who gets it. I was totally shocked, we weren’t in our wildest dreams thinking it might be this soon even though we watch the list (because of Ken’s AB blood type we can tell where he is.) Ken told him he felt fine and wasn’t having any major problems, other then the “normal” symptoms. Doc said with PSC, sooner is better than later – I agree, but not this soon! I tried to talk to Ken about turning the liver down and waiting – that’s a no go, he is ready now, and if they call him back, he said, he’ll say yes. I know there is a patient in Houston with a MELD of 19-24 so I assume that’s the #1 they talked about. Yikes, I’m so not ready. Funny thing is, I was just e-mailing his coordinator and setting up his next labs for April 12 (I’m almost positive they will go down, he doesn’t look nearly as yellow as he was). I sure hope the patient in Houston gets the call. It’s such a hard decision, go early and avoid being totally run down, cancer and???? Or, keep your own parts as long as you can. Ken knows the pros and cons; the decision is up to him. I’ll let you know…..but I’m hoping for no phone calls tonight. Barb in Texas - Together in the Fight, Whatever it Takes! Guest guest
WOW Barb! Do I know what you are feeling! My husband is also AB blood type and after 6 months of being listed and many dry runs at a transplant we got " the " call on January 3rd. It was hard that first month. But I can tell you that it is a relief to be on the other side of the transplant. Sure there are all the ugly possiblities, but when the doc tell you that everything looks great and the new liver is doing its job... it is the best!!!! I also understand the feeling... " but he is feeling so good right now, do we really need to transplant? " For that I will say this too was hard. For DH to go into the transplant feeling good and coming out feeling like total carp, IT SUCKED! I highly suggest having someone with him during the nights, right after tansplant. I found that the night shift was quieter than the day, and that he needed me more then. I would stay with him at night, in the morning wait for rounds then head to bed. That one week seemed like two. Also make sure he does not mess with his pain meds. It took FOREVER for Darryll to get his pain under control. If you are interested you can read my husbands blatherings at www.delivermyliver.com It will give you a picture of the future to come. He has returned to work part-time and at this point we are very happy with how he is doing. Good Luck and you and your son are in my prayers!
