Hi Steve:

I'd say it was about four months before I kicked with reasonable power. I'm

still not up to full tilt with my 8 month old resurf but am definitely up to it

with the older one. I'd say about a year is safe.

I did start with basic kata. I don't know what style you do but I do Goju Ryu

and we have a kata called Seienshin which has no kicks and is mainly in

shiko-dachi (horse stance). I did that a lot, and tried to get as low as

possible

as gently as possible.

I've never been terribly flexible. I didn't begin kicking above about knee

height again until maybe three months post op and then took it up very

gradually. After the first one. I could do front kicks to the throat after about

six

months but didn't push it.

I haven't done much bag work or makiwara training. I prefer to hit three

folded up jackets held by someone. It doesn't hurt your hands like a bag does

and

it's a lot more like hitting a person. I did have a go at a heavy bag last

week and stopped because of the way my hands felt, not because of any leg or hip

problems

Also I play guitar so smashing a makiwara would ruin my hands. :-)

Goju Ryu doesn't do a lot of high kicking either, so kicking at head height

isn't really my focus.

Just take it very easy and walk a lot. The walking is very important. I was

also alone in England for three weeks the first time but it really wasn't a

problem, although I didn't have two at the same time.

Feel free to write me directly again.

Best of luck

Des

So how did you ease yourself back into training? What did you start

with? Just basic kata? How long before you could kick with a

reasonable amount of power? Can you do bag work and makiwara training now?
