Guest guest
Excellent idea! I know hot dogs are also out due to the nitrates and some of the white cheeses. list of " don't eat/drink these.... " items ?? hi everyone... not that I'm preggers... yet!! ;-) but I've been reading about some of the stuff we're not supposed to have & wonder if anyone has a good list or if we can compile one of things we are not supposed to eat/drink while PG. we've come up with artificial sweeteners apart from Splenda... I had just read that cold cuts & deli meats are a no-no?? and someone else said no sushi for the duration?? :-( LOL obviously booze is out, and caffeine. so what else is on a list like this????? everyone join in & let's make this the definitive source. :-) best to all... hugs, Kath. Guest guest
I was suprised at cold cuts and deli meats, but my doc said that too!! Also, any soft cheeses or cheese spreads... they can contain some bacteria called lysonine?? I think that's wrong, but the soft cheese thing is right! Guest guest
, I heard about that study also, and did some research about it. It was only a study done on a total of TEN fish. First: Too small a sample size to consider a valid study; Second: the fish were taken only from one area of the country... definately not a valid study!; Third: the " chemical-mix " they talked about isn't actually a chemical " mix " , they just said it that way so they didn't have to explain what it was in enough detail that the typical person could understand it... so, there again, the results are twisted. I will have to ask my husband to explain it to me again, what the actual thing they were evaluating is... and pass it on asap (he went out of town this morning). Anyway... better off staying away from any fish more than once a week because of mercury, anyway! :~) Hugs Sharon said: > > > > > Just yesterday a study came out saying that most farmed salmon > contains dangerous levels of some cancer-causing chemical. Guest guest
Can I ask why no feta? I have been CRAVING feta big time. I can't do regular milk, so the only way I can get calcium without pills. What about creamed cheese? Is that considered a soft cheese? Thanks Niki -- Re: list of " don't eat/drink these.... " items ?? This has been a CONSTANT source of friction for my husband and I. My OB is VERY relaxed and basically told me I can eat anything that doesn't move. My husband, on the other hand, thinks that if I didn't grow it myself, I shouldn't eat it! ITEMS TO AVOID: raw meat/fish/eggs alcohol/drugs (duh) soft cheeses (no brie or feta, etc) Sacharine (Sweet n Low) ITEMS TO LIMIT (or cut out if you want to be extremely careful): caffeine artificial sweeteners (except Splenda) artificial color preservatives (especially sodium nitrite/nitrate) MSG Now, none of the " items to limit " foods have been shown to cause any birth defects in studies, but keep in mind that testing pregnant women is VERY difficult. Would YOU volunteer for scientific study? I sure as hell wouldn't. So the data isn't really all there. And if you DO try to cut out everything on both lists, it's EXTREMELY challenging. EVERY single kind of deli meat I've seen pre-packaged (including Healthy Choice brand) contains sodium nitrite/nitrate. The only one I've found that doesn't is Safeway's fresh pan-roasted turkey from their deli. ALL pork products (with the exception of raw pork that you cook yourself) contain sodium nitrite/nitrate. ALL OF THEM. I'm DYING for a friggin hot dog, but they are off limits to me (because of my uber-strict husband). Most cheeses that aren't white contain food coloring. Ranch salad dressing - even if you make it fresh from the packet - contains MSG (well - except Newman's Own if you can stomach it). So do most brands of salted nuts (like Mr. Peanut roasted peanuts - FULL of MSG). I thought I could generally suffer through 9 months eating Caesar salads instead of my favorite ranch dressing, but no. Most Caesar salad dressings (at restaurants at least) contain RAW EGGS. I've also completely avoided the frozen food isle (where I used to do ALL my shopping - Lean Cuisines, etc) since most of those foods contain preservatives. Also, I've generally adopted a policy that if I can't pronounce all of the ingredients, I can't eat it. Just yesterday a study came out saying that most farmed salmon contains dangerous levels of some cancer-causing chemical. That's one more food to cross of my list. The only two things I've absolutely REFUSED to give up - even though I probably should - are Kraft singles and caffeine. It was either drink coffee or quit my job. My husband finally gave in... I realize that this list makes me seem INCREDIBLY paranoid. Most of these foods are probably fine. " Probably " just isn't good enough for me and my baby boy! Soft cheeses aren't pasteurized and run the small risk of listeria...which isn't a big deal for grown ups, but can be fatal to an embryo/fetus. Guest guest
Kathy, I am so glad you posted these questions. I am trying to educate myself before my hubby and I start trying to get pregnant. I feel so silly not knowing anything about be pregnant. All the response to your post has been very helpful. I see a lot of people using an abbreviation " TTC " . What does that mean?? I feel so silly for not knowing. Guest guest
Sharon... I'm sorry, I should have given more info. If the hotdogs are cooked until they are steaming hot they are okay. Guest guest
I was just told no unpasturized cheeses. Which would include many of the soft cheeses, but the reason was that they ar not pasturized. Guest guest
I heard that all of the soft cheeses that are from US are ok cause they have to be made from pasturized milk. You only have to worry about imported cheeses because they don't have to use pasturized milk. Guest guest
Hi! Thanks.... oh man... I am SO glad... I cooked them until they split, then I put them in the microwave for 30 seconds longer. It's a bit of " overkill " , but they are really good that way! LOL! I'm glad I can have them... I wonder... is it normal to go through craving one thing, then get sick of it and crave something else... and if the first thing comes around, it makes you sick?? I've been doing that! LOL!
