Guest guest
Hi Phil, I know the worries of having your child go thru any kind of surgery, when my youngest son was three we found a lump under his arm. A few day before he went into surgery we told him he would be asleep while the doctor takes your lump away. He was actually quite fascinated by what the nurses were doing and asked them questions the day of his surgery. My husband got to be with him until he feel asleep in the operating room. The tough part when he came home, was to keep him still so he wouldn't rip his stitches out. We watched movies, read alot of books, I had bought him some new paint by numbers, and a chalk board that was his favorite. Good luck with your sons biopsy, I wish you all the best! I have added him to my prayer calendar and will do just that on Wednesday. Please let us know how it went when you have a chance. God bless you In a message dated 4/1/2005 8:36:53 A.M. Can anyone who has experience with this procedure on a young child offer me advice on what to tell my son? He needs to know what is going to happen so he feels safe and secure. In the past, I made a point to explain everything to my son before we got to the doctors/hospital/radiologist/etc. This time I don't understand the detailed steps to this procedure so it is difficult for me to explain what will happen to him without scaring him unnecessarily. I have placed a call with the case nurse, but she has not called me back, yet. Phil
Guest guest
Hi Phil, Just wanted to let you know, we are from the Boston area, we drove out with our daughter for a second opinion at s Hopkins. We saw a Dr. Geetha, she is an angel, we saw her on 3/25/04 and although we are now seeing a doctor her in Boston, you know, she calls me every other day to check on Jennell. She is even talking with the new doctor we have chosen here and they will be working together for Jennell. I loved s Hopkins, I wish we lived closer. Best of luck and God bless you and your child for good news Cathy....Jennell's Mom

Guest guest
Hi Phil, I'm just back from a few days off so forgive my late reply. Hopefully, some of our experience might be useful. For and I, the anticipation was worse than the actual biopsy. I know I was running on raw terror at the time trying to find any disease that matched 's symptoms. was petrified until the fentenyl kicked in (no surprise there). They let me stay in until the IV was in place. The biopsy went quickly after that (maybe 10-15 minutes). Right after the biopsy, was moved into pediatric intensive care for an hour during which they took vitals every five minutes. After IC, he went to the day hospital for the balance of the day. We were at the hospital for 8-9 hours. The big post-biopsy warnings were to avoid bumps on the road (as if we could get out of the hospital without going over speedbumps! It was a memorable drive) and to stay as immobile as possible for a day or so. Essentially, any activities that might cause the tiny clot to dislodge were off limits for a few days. His docs admitted they were very conservative and ruled out school for two weeks. Many adults go to work the next day. Analysis of the biopsy sample involves light microscopy, electron microscopy and immunoflourescence. Light microscopy results are available almost immediately (we got these the next day by phone). A pretty definitive diagnosis can be made on the basis of light microscopy alone. The other results take substantially longer (6 weeks for us). Good luck on Wednesday. Please let us know how it goes. Guest guest
Hi... I'm fairly new here, but thought I would drop a quick note. My 3 1/2 yr old daughter, , had a renal biopsy last winter when she was just barely 2 yrs old. Overall it was a fairly good experience. She was relatively sore afterwards for about 2 weeks, but didn't have any major problems. We told her about what was going to happen, but of course since she was only 2, I'm not sure how much she took in. (Ironically, though, having said that, just last week out of no-where she said she did not want to go to the hospital and get anymore shots in the back! amazing...) I just KNEW she was going to be terrified since she had already been poked and prodded for weeks... BUT... they gave her Versed (sedative) right after we got to the hospital and she was good and drunk when they took her back to the OR. When the tech came to get her, he asked her if she wanted to go breathe some candy air. A tipsy little went willingly and happily! The only thing we weren't prepared for was the swelling from the fluids. She was very sleepy for the rest of the day... but once everything wore off she was good to go. I told her dr the next day that we were having a hard time keeping her still, and her doc said not to worry about it. So long as she wasn't doing things like jumping on a trampoline, or other contact sports, she would be fine. I hope everything goes well for you. It was pretty scary for us and she was diagnosed with IgAN, but is now in remission and doing very well. Good luck! Guest guest
Hi Kris, I am so sorry to hear that little has IgAN, but I did want to extend a warm welcome to you. We have so many mothers and fathers of children with IgAN here. I hope you can find this group a great source of encouragement. Welcome again. In a message dated 4/4/2005 4:15:04 A.M.
