Guest guest
Hi Phil My daughter although 16 yrs old just had one done on 3/15/05. Her biopsy involve a small, very small incision just above her left kidney where they went in with a special needle and took out 4 pieces of her kidney. She was medicated intravenously, they told her she would be awake through the procedure but she remembers absolutely nothing and she slept for about 3 hours after . We were told that the procedure would take approximately 1 to 1 1/2 hours, she was back in her room in 40 minutes. After she had to stay on her back for 6 hours to let the kidney heal and prevent internal bleeding. After the six hours she was allowed to sit up slightly in bed but still bed ridden until the next morning then we went home. She was not able to return to school for the rest of that week, just for precaution reasons so that she didn't get accidentally pushed or hit on the biopsy sight. Today her incision is still a little sore but not too bad and looks like it is healing fine. My prayers will be with you and your son for a successful biopsy, and that they find only minor problems if any Cathy....Jennell's Mom
Guest guest
Cathy, Thank you for the reply. This sounds similar to what the doctor told us but she said for a three y.o. they need to anestize him during the procedure cause he'd never keep still. Those I.V. are good because it means only one needle, but they sure do hurt going in that one time. I am not sure who will feel more pain: him or his mom and dad How long did it take to get the results? I hope you daughter got good results, too. Guest guest
Phil, ask the doctor to put the numbing gel on your sons hand first before he inserts the needle that will help with the pain. It took about 4 days for the results, her biopsy was on Monday and on that following Friday we had the printed results when we met with the doctors. You may want to call your doc now and ask them how long they expect it to be for the results and if you will be meeting in his office for a consult on the results make that appointment now. The waiting for test results is what gets me. My daughters biopsy showed scarring on her kidneys and her kidney disease is the aggressive type of IgaN. She's really tired, is loosing weight and not eating, no appetite, just feeling really down in spirit. But I know her, she is a fighter and she will get better. And so will your son. God Bless Cathy....Jennell's Mom
Guest guest
Hi Phil, My son recently had a biopsy and although he is a little older, 13, I'm sure the procedure is pretty much the same. When he went into the procedure room they took his vitals and then placed a needle in his hand (they couldn't get it in the arm, he was a little dehydrated). They only stuck him once and that is what the used for both the IV drip and the anesthesia (conscious sedation). The doctor then came in a did a kidney sonogram and drew some lines on his back to show exactly where he wanted to stick the needle. We stayed with him until he fell asleep, literally 10 seconds after giving him the sedation. From the time he fell asleep to the time he woke up was exactly 17 minutes. He wasn't in any pain after the procedure, but did stay in the hospital overnight as that is the doctor's own protocol. It is an ambulatory procedure, but 's doctor prefers his patient's to stay in. Hope this helps. Elaine, mom to , 13 > > > My 3 year old is getting a kidney biopsy this Wednesday. Guest guest
Hi Phil, Good luck with your son's biopsy, I truly hope everything comes back normal. The hardest part is going to be keeping him resting for the 24 hours after and keeping him somewhat quiet for the week or so while his body heals up. :-) If you have been explaining things to him all along I would put things into simple terms such as....he will have a needle put in his hand or arm, some fluid will go in that will make him sleepy, they will take some pictures of his kidney so they know where to take a sample from, and then a small needle will take a pinch of the kidney for the doctors to look at. When that is over he will wake up from napping and will have to lay quietly so his body can heal from the pinch. Normally it takes up to two weeks to get your results back. In cases such as mine or Cathy's daughter Jennell the biopsies early results were so bad that the doctors wanted to start treatment right away. Trust me waiting for results for two weeks is much better than getting a call 3 days after the biopsy asking " How soon can you be in my office, I don't want to talk with you over the phone about this. " The full results of my biopsy weren't in for two weeks but the early results showed enough of a problem that I was on IV steroids 4 days after my biopsy was done. So expect the doctor to set up an appointment about 2 weeks out to go over the biopsy results with you as long as things don't look bad. Also some cases take longer than 2 weeks as (Rob's mom) discovered. Rob's biopsy didn't present as IgAN and it took the pathologists over a month if my memory serves me right to come up with the diagnosis of Alports. Good luck with it all and please let us know how it goes. Amy G. Re: advice on biopsy Cathy, Thank you for the reply. Guest guest
My son was 7 at his biopsy and he was completely out for 2-3 hours. We went into the Children's Medical Center OR area where was able to choose a special toy (his little brother got one also, from the sibling section). The doctor and nurses came in and spoke to him, making him feel so comfortable. They told him everything they would do. He was allowed to ask questions, allowed to pick his gown, allowed to choose his flavor of gas (bubblegum). They even let him keep the gas mask which he loved. The doctor was in the recovery room with us discussing how it went. There had been a concern that he might need blood as he was already anemic and the biopsy could bleed, but he didn't. He spent the night in the hospital but I don't remember him being in any pain. He was uncomfortable for awhile as they kept pressure on the biopsy site with a fluid bag underneath him. He didn't play soccer for a couple of weeks because I wouldn't let him, not because he hurt. We were told to not let him run around, which I know will be hard for a 3 yr old. We had preliminary results in about a week- which was a very long week. That was Nov. 2003. He still sees the neph every 3 months but he is stable and a completely normal 2nd grader. Praying for your son , mom to ,8 advice on biopsy My 3 year old is getting a kidney biopsy this Wednesday. Can anyone who has experience with this procedure on a young child offer me advice on what to tell my son? He needs to know what is going to happen so he feels safe and secure. In the past, I made a point to explain everything to my son before we got to the doctors/hospital/radiologist/etc. This time I don't understand the detailed steps to this procedure so it is difficult for me to explain what will happen to him without scaring him unnecessarily. I have placed a call with the case nurse, but she has not called me back, yet. Guest guest
Amy, you give such excellent advice.Trying to explain things before hand is a great idea, so the child is not totally shocked at what is happening to him. I sure hate to see a 3 year old go through this. I know with Rob, even though he was 15, we had a hard time keeping him in bed for that 24 hour period. I ended up laying half my body over the foot of his bed so that if he tried to get up, I felt it and could stop him. And you are correct, it did take over a month for Rob's results. What was thought to be IgA nephropathy, pre-biopsy, turned out to be Alports. We also ended up sending his biopsy off to another nephrologist and that took an additional month and a half or so... The waiting is the hardest part... and Rob 15 So expect the doctor to set up an appointment about 2 weeks out to go over the biopsy results with you as long as things don't look bad. Also some cases take longer than 2 weeks as (Rob's mom) discovered. Guest guest
Hi Phil, I'm so sorry to hear your son has to have a kidney biopsy. My daughter was 10 when she had her biopsy (she's turning 13 this Sunday), and it followed the same procedure that folks have been describing to you. The hardest part (I would expect) will be keeping him still after he wakes up. Elisabet was required to lie on her back (to make sure she wasn't bleeding) for several hours. With all the modern technology these days, hospitals are well equipped for this. Elisabet's room had a VCR and she watched movies after she woke up (she slept several hours first) which helped to pass the time. I would expect his room to have a TV/VCR as well. Even though we don't generally watch many movies, that day it was a blessing. If he has a favorite video, I bet you could even bring it with you. You are so wise to explain things to your son. We've always tried to tell Elisabet (as best as we can) what is going to happen and what she can expect. Elisabet had her biopsy done at Herhsey Medical (PA) and her doctors let us stay with her the entire time. My husband even watched him do the biopsy (her neph. invited him in which surprised us both). We both stayed in her room with her afterward which really helped. I think the medical community has come a long way in terms of allowing parents to hold and help comfort their children. It certainly makes it less traumatic for everyone if mon and dad can be there. Don't be afraid to ask for what you want and what you think your son needs. We have 5 chilren and another one of our daughters was hospitalized when she was 2. She needed IVs at that time and we described it as " a drink in your arm " . She understood this, even at 2. When she was really sick, it wasn't a problem because she was so lethargic, but as she got better, we were concerned she would try to pull it out of her arm. She understood it was a " drink " and that she needed it and she left it alone. Just another idea for you as you try to explain it all in words your son can understand. To this day, we still call IVs, " a drink in your arm " . As Cathy suggested too, the numbing gel is great stuff (before any needle stick). The nurses don't always offer it, but when I ask, they are glad to use it. As for it being hard on mom and dad, you're right about that. These things are difficult on the whole family, not just the patient. Whatever you and your wife can do to make your life simpler during the biopsy week, do it. Even as you take really good care of your son, be extra kind to yourselves too, if you can. It's a stressful time. As people have shared, the waiting is tough. We were told it would be two weeks, but got the results after just one week. It was the week before Christmas, and her neph. wanted to tell us before Christmas rather than after, which we appreciated. Even though it wasn't the news we wanted, knowing was better than wondering. Sorry this got so long, hope it's helpful, B., Elisabet's mom (12 for 2 more days) > > > My 3 year old is getting a kidney biopsy this Wednesday. Guest guest
Hi Phil, I know the worries of having your child go thru any kind of surgery, when my youngest son was three we found a lump under his arm. A few day before he went into surgery we told him he would be asleep while the doctor takes your lump away. He was actually quite fascinated by what the nurses were doing and asked them questions the day of his surgery. My husband got to be with him until he feel asleep in the operating room. The tough part when he came home, was to keep him still so he wouldn't rip his stitches out. We watched movies, read alot of books, I had bought him some new paint by numbers, and a chalk board that was his favorite. Good luck with your sons biopsy, I wish you all the best! I have added him to my prayer calendar and will do just that on Wednesday. Please let us know how it went when you have a chance. God bless you In a message dated 4/1/2005 8:36:53 A.M. Phil
