Guest guest
Yikes, I just got back from the Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders (CASD) conference in Long Beach, CA and they were talking a LOT about environmental issues. Steel belted radials have cadmium in them...I would check to see what kinds of tires. I would want to make sure the wood chips weren't stained or anything...I would talk to the company. Sand attracts cats... I would weigh the pros and cons of each being as careful as you can...We have sand. Every few days, very carefully picks a few grains to eat. Sigh. Good luck! , mom to and Re: [ ] OT-rubber tire mulch vs. wood mulch We're getting new mulch for our backyard playground. Does rubber tire mulch contain toxins that will affect our children? Is wood mulch a safer choice? Or do we need to just use sand to be completely safe? Thanks so much! Jukoski
Guest guest
I think there might be cadmium in rubber tires. Dagmar. Guest guest
Hi , We got our play set from Cedar Works http://cedarworks.com/ It is made from untreated northern white cedar. If you live near them, you might see if they have wood chips available. Otherwise, I know they also recommend a 6 inch base of pea stone as a cushion under their play sets. I know stone sounds weird, but at the time we used wood chip since I figured my 2 year old would put the stones in his mouth. Now he is 8 and I wish I had the stone. I thought about the tire stuff too, but I figured it would be full of junk, and I thought my dog would chew it up, which wouldn't be good for him.... Not an easy decision......let us know what you find out would you?? nne Re: [ ] OT-rubber tire mulch vs. wood mulch We're getting new mulch for our backyard playground.
