Red flags everywhere!!!...you aren't talking with your insurance co

about this, I hope. If you are wise, inform yourself as best as you

can about the procedure and if you are eligible, and choose a

surgeon. Then let their people determine if you are covered.

Unless you speak " insurance " you can dig yourself into a hole. If you

have dug yourself in already, you should stop digging.

Best advice anyone can give...

Just received my detailed bill. Here are some data:

Resurfacing cost total almost $31,000.

3 days in hospital incl various minor expenses $ 4000

Op room " rental " , based on time $ 4300

Conserve Plus incl $600 cement $ 8100

Other materials/equipment usage in Op room $ 4000 (1)

2 blood transfusions (next day) $ 800 (2)

Therapists $ 200

Surgeon $ 7150

Anaesthesist $ 1725

(1) Largest items were $ 1066 for surgical stapler and $900 for blood

salvaging equipment.

(2) This was my own blood. The 2 autologous donations themselves had

also been charged at $550 total.

My insurance got some good discounts on peoples fees but hardly

anything on the rest. I had already hit my total yearly liability

(due to other surgery earlier in the year), so I did not pay

anything :)

PS. Post op costs: a therapy session may cost somewhere between $75 -

$150. Insurance usually gets a 50% cut on those. How many you need,

if at all, depends on your individual situation.

In England it's £15000 to £22000 ($28500 to $41500 U.S.) depending which OS

you see. That all inclusive price - the only extras are plane fare and

hotel if needed.

I should have added that I worked on £1 = $1.9. 12 months ago it was

considerably different. We, that is the UK, stayed out of the Eurozone and

now exports are suffering. I would expect to see the Dollar to rise agaist

Sterling which would knock a considerable chunk off the costs mentioned. I

believe some UK hospital groups will give you an inclusive fixed price in

Dollars which should be cheaper than the figures I quoted.
