Wow, folks. I'm leaving for S.C. on Thursday and having sugery on

Monday, 1/2/04 (That's Groundhog's Day, not a loop I want to get

stuck in!). Anyway, now I'm having all of these questions: How long

do I have to observe the 90 degree rule once I'm post-op?? What kind

of care will I need from family/friends once I get home and for how

long? When can I shower and do all of that other stuff, like wash my

hair (if I can't bend over more than 90 degrees)? Anything else I

should know? Thanks, Joyce in Kentucky (Dr. Steve: anyone who

calls me a youngster is at the head of my list of stars!)

Joyce,

Most surgeons won't allow you to shower until the staples are out and the wound

is pretty well closed. I washed my hair in the sink in the hospital post-op day

2. Someone told me that I wouldn't care that my hair wasn't washed--boy was she

wrong!! The sink had a high faucet, and I just stuck my operated leg a bit

behind me, and had nice clean hair. I have very strong arms, so I think I sort

of leaned on the sink and braced myself with my arms...

I had sponge baths and was also able to wash my hair in my kitchen sink when I

got home--it was surprisingly refreshing.

I had all hip precautions lifted at 4 1/2 weeks (had both hips done at same

time), and was able to shower & get the incision wet within 2 weeks. Used

crutches for 6 weeks and now am as good as I ever was now at 5 months

post-op (yesterday). I still am working on my gait, but am 90% " normal " in

the way I walk, and feel like I'm walking 100% normal. Good luck!

Joyce,

The hospital I was in (England) had everyone showering and washing their

hair asap---by day 3 at the latest and encouraged daily showers and hair

wash for morale. We had a good waterproof bandage on the wound, a

rather nice shower chair, and, the first time, help from a good nurse.

Hang in there! It'll be here and gone before you know it. They have

dandy waterproof dressings that allow you to shower and shampoo while

you're even in the hospital (there are no staples - just internal

stitches and tape) I think the good doc wants you to observe 90

degrees for 6 weeks, but I felt so good after just a few weeks that I

would forget and occasionally find myself in violation. Fortunately,

nothing happened. Your body usually will tell you if you're getting

near the danger zone, I found.

What hospital will you be in? If you're in Lexington, please say hi

to Carol the day nurse, for me. She was so sweet. And please tell

Lee that Lois says hello.
