The T-coils can vary in size and receptive ability. For instance, our son's old analogs had a much stronger t-coil and the difference between those and his new aids (same manufacturer) was explained as being due to the room available for the t-coil. As far as talking on the phone with aids, it probably varies depending on the extent of the loss. I know my grandfather has a program that he switches on his hearing aid when he is using the phone.
