Jane,

I did a Medline data base search using " Chiari AND sweating " as the search

phrase and found one reference that may pertain to your problem. You might want

to show the reference to your doctor. See below:

Segmental hyperhidrosis (sweating) in two siblings with Chiari type I

malformation.

Stovner LJ, Sjaastad O.

Eur Neurol. 1995;35(3):149-55.

Department of Neurology, Trondheim University Hospital, Norway.

A marked, left-sided segmental hyperhidrosis (sweating), verified by

quantitative evaporimetry, corresponded to an area of dissociated sensory loss

in 2 siblings (male 49 years old, female 47 years old). MRI scans of the head

and whole cord demonstrated a Chiari type I malformation in both. In the male,

there was a syrinx of the neck. The level of this did not correspond to the

hyperhidrosis and dissociated sensory loss areas of the trunk and thigh. The

female, who had no syrinx, had hyperhidrosis (sweating) and dissociated sensory

loss of the head, neck, upper trunk, and arm, and anisocoria (unequal pupil

size) with the larger pupil ipsilateral(same side of the body) to the sweating.

This rare disorder may be due to a disinhibition of the preganglionic

sympathetic neurons caused by cord lesion(s) interrupting inhibitory descending

and spinal pathways which are important for the normal thermoregulatory

sweating.

Bernie Meyer, WACMA staff, diagnosed in '89, Not decompressed

, age 60, married 30 yrs, wife Judy, three kids, ages-

24, 27, 29, symptoms of tinnitus and minor balance problems are

stable

Jane...

Not that I don't think that Bernard's reply is a possibility, but I suggest

that you look into the side effects of the Neurontin. I, too, am on

Neurontin, and, after I take my medication, I sweat profusely for 1-2 hours.

It drives me crazy, but the Neurontin helps. Also, I have discovered that

if I sleep in and miss my morning dose that I have " cold sweats " for the

rest of the day. This is just my experience... hops it helps.

I thought that it was just me who sweated like that. I am also on day long

morphine and neurontin. I blame the morphine because i did not do this when

I was only on the neurontin. warm regards Ann in Brisbane Australia

I sweated to and don´t use any medication. My surgeon said it could be chiari,

so I hope it stoped now. My surgery was at 6 may.
