I first contacted Dr. De Smet 9/21/03 via e-mail, which included a photograph of my most recent hip x-ray. He answered me less than nine hrs later saying that I would be an excellent candidate for resurfacing. (Incidentally, I'm 55 y/o, 5- 11, 162 lbs, and was in excellent health other than a severely arthritic left hip.) On 9/26/03, I asked him if I could be resurfaced on either 11/25 or 11/26/03, and less than seven hrs later he responded saying 11/25/03 was good for him. You also asked: " Did you pay him up front and how much was the total bill? " Dr. De Smet requests three separate payments totaling 3600 Euro ~ four wks prior to surgery: (1) 2500 Euro surgeon's fee; (2) 600 Euro Zircone fee; and (3) 500 Euro ANCA Clinic fee. (I wired the payments 10/24/03.) The remaining expenses are the 6900 Euro hospital fee (which is paid when you check into the hospital) and the Holiday Inn Gent UZ bill (which for me was 425 Euro for five nights @ 85 Euro/night). BTW, going to Belgium to have one of the best surgeons (and one of the warmest and caring human beings) in the world resurface my hip was easily the best thing I've done for myself in a long time...
