Hi Essa! You have a right to be concerned. You didn't mention what type of surgery you had, but telling you to stop your post-op regimen set red flags off all over the place for me. You may want to start by reading (and printing for her) this article http://www.gastricbypass.com/GBP-Pregnancy-Download.htm " >Pregnancy Following Gastric Bypass for Morbid Obesity. Read over the FAQs in the files section as well. Some of your questions about nutrition may be answered there. The bottom line is that it may be a good time to reacquaint yourself with your surgeon and nutritionist so that they might help you in working with your OB to insure you receive the best nutrition for you and baby. Guest guest
Since you had surgery, vitamins and minerals aren't as well absorbed now ( " malabsorption " ) so you wouldn't be getting everything you need from just 1 prenatal vitamin. Speak up and tell her she is " wrong " . I needed extra calcium, folic acid, B12 and iron but rarely managed to swallow down 1 prenatal per day. End result (mainly nutrition related), small baby, preterm labor, anemia, decalcified teeth, aching and I do mean ACHING bones and muscles. etc etc I'm certain you can appraoch your OB with the facts in hand and tell her that you do need the regular. Most OB's just add a prenatal vitamin to the WLS patient's regular vitamin regimen. Everyone in here takes something different I think though! lol

Guest guest
Dear Essa, You might want to continue your same, exact vitamin regimen you are currently on in addition to a good chewable prenatal vitamin. If your regimen is working for you, being pregnant is no reason to stop it. Some doctors are afraid to be " quoted " by patients who might tell others, " Dr. So-And-So told me to take these vitamins. " They are fearful of what their colleagues might think. MOST Doctors will only recommend prescription medication and will never recommend vitamins and/or herbal/homeopathic/natural remedies. I am sure there are people out there who have had very positive experiences regarding vitamins/herbal/homeopathic/natural remedies and doctors. That is why I used the words " most " and " some. Guest guest
Hi Essa, OMG, I totally agree with here. I would be very nervous too if my ob were to have told me to stop everything but the prenatal. I agree that you might want to call your surgeons office, I too was TOTALLY out of touch with my surgeons office because I felt that my post op complications could have been handled better and I never went back to him, but had lab work done with my primary physician instead, BUT, when I got pregnant I didn't hesitate to call his office up, talked to the nurse, AND the nurse from my ob's office called and spoke with their nurse as well. It really helps when your ob can consult with your surgeon's office to get insight as how to handle your pregnancy. I wish you luck, and not to go against your ob's orders or anything, I would STILL continue your supplements, ESPECIALLY calcium citrate. Good luck and please let us know how it goes.
