Burning question about fiber

Hi everyone:

I was wayward for a couple of months. Ok I admit it I went a little crazy.

I'm over my personal dilemma and back to the things that are important to

me: living a healthy life. And I am so glad that you are all still here

supporting each other.

I went back to flex points after failing miserably (not)following core, and

have been OP for 1 week. I lost 3 of the 10 pounds that I had gained. I'm

very happy with this new start back into healthy eating. And very positive

that I will make sure I don't let the crazy things that happen in life

interfere with my goals.

I have been wondering what happened to the question of the day? I know that

Maureen (wasn't it she who was posting those?) is probably very busy but I

enjoyed those questions. Got me thinking on the right track in the AM when

I read it. SO, I would like to propose the following BURNING question to

the group.

How do you get your fiber?

It has been suggested by the American Dietetic association that we should

get 20 to 30 grams of fiber a day. There is a lot of talk about reducing or

removing bread from our diets, and since I make my own 10 grain bread, which

is real high in fiber, I wonder how else people are meeting fiber

requirements. I also eat 5 - 7 grain whole cereals, which are high in

fiber, and vegetables and fruit. But I still find it hard to reach that

20 - 30 grams per day.

Thank you, in advance for your input.

I eat 2 cups of Raisin Bran for breakfast and that takes care of 14-16 grams of

my daily fiber. I make sure the breads I eat have at least 3 grams of fiber per

slice. I also make sure I eat an apple or two during the day. The rest of my

fiber comes from veggies I add to my Lean Cuisines or refried beans I eat on

Taco night.

I generally start my day with 3/4 cup of Kashi Go Lean w/ Fruit. That's

8-10 grams of

fiber. My wife cooks vegetarian style - uses a lot of beans and lentils

- that helps with

the fiber intake.

I remember calling in to a radio talk show with a Doctor and I asked him the

same question. My dh had been diagnosed with high cholesterol and they told

us to really up his fiber in take to the 25-30 a day.......lol......YIKES!

Wel this dr. told me the it is very unlikely that anyone eats that much, but

by eating veggies/fruit with each meal, eating high fiber cereal for

breakfast and snacking on it during the day.

Still never got the full amount in.

A lentil is a legume... a cousin to the pea and the chickpea, I believe. My

local grocery store carries them dried, in the same aisle as the dried beans

and rice. You can use them for all sorts of things... lentil soup, for

example. I also make lentil loaf from time to time. I sometimes just smoosh

them up with some brown rice, a little cornmeal and an egg to bind and then

saute the mixture. (I use my mom's lentil burger recipe. I just don't bother

with making the actual burger. I call this Lentil Mash.)
