Guest guest
Katy, I think we had this discussion a year ago when I checked it out; the ONLY one that is legal is the All Natural No Salt Added Creamy. The one you are talking about was the All Natural Reduced Fat variety which plainly states on the label, Maltodextrin ( replaces fat) added and it is the only variety that shows 2G of sugar on the label: http://www.smuckers.com/products/details.aspx?groupId=2 & categoryId=11 & flavorId=69 All the other All Natural varieties show 1G of sugar on their label: http://www.smuckers.com/products/details.aspx?groupId=2 & categoryId=11 & flavorId=68 Technically, I don't have a letter, but I spent a good 20 mins. on the phone with the company a year ago and it was good enough for me. You are welcome to do as you see fit. Terry Re: Peanut Butter I don't agree that Smuckers is legal. A couple years back it was checked out and there was more sugar on the label then could be accounted for. The number was slightly higher like maybe a 2 or a 3 under sugar content. You can taste the sweetness to if I have peanut butter from my peanuts and then taste Smuckers. Katy Terry wrote: I called Smuckers when I started this diet. Even though I did not get a letter from them, I determined that the Smucker's natural no salt added was legal, as it just contains peanuts. The woman I spoke to then said there was nothing else added, that Smucker's actually is in the forefront of championing accurate labeling and if it's not on the label, it's not in the jar.____________________________________________________________ Win the battle of the bulge with great liposuction solutions. Guest guest
Terry, it's not the low fat I'm talking about. It is the regular peanut butter. Guest guest
Never use anything made with raw peanuts; there is a great fear of aflaxtoxin. Companies making peanut butter are carefully monitored for aflatoxin contamination so most pure bought peanut butters (without additives) should be OK. Never use raw peanuts to make peanut butter!!! Peanuts alone are not to be tried until after six months. Natural peanut butter with no sugar added is allowed.Peanuts in the shell may be tried cautiously after 6 months on the diet if diarrhea is gone. Shelled peanuts are illegal. Nuts sold in mixtures are not allowed, as most are roasted with a starch coating. I use the peanut butter that has oil on the top of the peanut creamed and has to be stirred to mix in the oil. No sugar added. ___________________________________________________Loving Care Gay Surgery '75, CD '94,SCD '97, No meds. Guest guest
Katy, I'm not quite sure what you mean by 'regular'. This link brings you to what I consider 'regular'. The label states 1 Gram sugar as do all the varieties except the reduced fat and the PB and Goober jelly. Please check out their web site and check the labels for yourself. And I must excuse myself from any further discussion on PB as I have 2 boys to tuck into bed. http://www.smuckers.com/products/details.aspx?groupId=2 & categoryId=11 & flavorId=66 Terry Re: Peanut Butter Terry, it's not the low fat I'm talking about. Guest guest
Oh and the Natural with Honey has 4 Grams of sugar for obvious reasons. Guest guest
Sea salt is fine and any brand of kosher salt is fine as long as the only ingredient is salt.I am one year into the diet and recently started using regular table salt on occasion only because I do not want to become deficient in iodide/iodine. Marilyn has said that Elaine felt the iodized salt was essential and was worth the amount of dextrose, but I wanted to wait to chance it. Some people get iodide/iodine in a supplement, but again, I'm trying to keep it simple! My sea salt has iodine in it. Is that rare or something? Guest guest
Hi, If I decided to make Peanute Butter myself, would I used Peanuts in shells that were roasted? Also, I made some banana bread to freeze. I figure the more I do ahead of time the better. The recipe called for chopped walnuts. I looked for walnuts in shells because the bags of chopped walnuts were risky to me. I don't know what BHT is. The ingredients I found online says "BHT (0.02%) in Corn Oil Added to Preserve Freshness". Is this good? probably not!!! Where do I buy my Walnuts and if I were to make my own butters is roasted and in shell Peanuts, almonds, macadamia, cashew and peacans the way to go? Thanks, Val Subject: Re: Peanut ButterTo: BTVC-SCD Date: Sunday, June 28, 2009, 9:25 PM Never use anything made with raw peanuts; there is a great fear of aflaxtoxin. Guest guest
I have had a similar experience as Katy. My own peanut butter doesn't taste as sweet as Smucker's Natural. Now that I'm well along on SCD (more than 5 years) I tolerate the Smuckers Natural reasonably well, and use it in a pinch or when I'm tired or dealing with a hurricane, but I still make a batch of my own peanut butter every month. However, during the first 3 ears on SCD I had to make my own peanut butter because my body reacted to the Smuckers Natural. Trial and error proved to me that there was something in the Smuckers Natural peanut butter that wasn't listed on the label. I assumed it was sugar, as my own didn't taste sweet. I don't eat much peanut butter, keeping it to no more than one teaspoon per day, but it is the only high-calorie, high-fat item my digestion can tolerate in small amounts. Always triggers some nausea, but I usually mix the peanut butter in applesauce for a decadent treat, the only one my digestion tolerates.; and it has the benefit of leveling off my blood glucose that surges when I eat fruit alone. Nut butters, all of the ones I've tried, have made me symptomatic for days. Odd, I know, the opposite of what most on SCD experience. Kim M.
