Hi All,

I went to an immune system presentation a few weeks ago where the

main topic was all the diseases and disorders that can happen when

your immune system is malfunctioning or unable to keep up with

demands (low resiliance).

Both cancer and allergies are related to a low immune system.

Specifically (and I'm not a medical doctor) it's the natural killer

cells (NK cells) that are low. The point of the seminar was to

present the philosophy and development of a product to boost the

level of NK cells and to report case histories of

recoveries/remissions (and of course at the end to sell that product).

I'm not in any way affiliated with this product, but I did buy a

bottle. I don't consider myself in any imminent immunological

danger, but supposedly the average North American is not very far

from the danger zone, even when seemingly in the best of health.

Here are my notes/excerpts from pamphlets from the " natural immune

system modulation " presentation:

A few years ago, an article was published in The Lancet:

[EXCERPT] " Interpretation: Our results indicate that medium and high

cytotoxic activity of peripheral-blood lymphocytes is associated with

reduced cancer risk, whereas low activity is associated with

increased cancer risk suggesting a role for natural immunological

host defence mechanisms against cancer. [Lancet 2000; 356: 1795–99] "

This research has led to product development, which has passed

through both FDA and Health Canada approvals. The doctor who is

primarily behind the development is Dr Stoff, MD, Viro-

Immunologist, speaker and author.

Through contact with Tom Rice, marketing rep in the SW Ontario area,

both at the presentation and via email, I have learned the following

(excerpts from his email message):

- That " Princess Margaret Hospital (Toronto ON) has the equipment now

to perform Dr. Stoff's immune system testing and the OMA and OHIP are

in talks to cover this procedure. "

My comments:

What Dr Stoff was focused on was discussing the relationship between

NK (natural killer) cell level in the immune system [well documented

by various studies] and a number of diseases; and the response of the

immune system to the treatment with the " all natural " immune system

modulation extract (product sold by Body Wise). He discussed a

variety of patient success stories, referring to the following slide:

The handbook summarizes the theory, development and clinical

applications for patients to bring to their doctors. Some excerpts:

I'm pretty sure that the only cancers associated with impaired immune systems,

such as AIDS, are Kaposi's sarcoma and lymphoma. If impaired immune systems

were the problem in and of itself, people with AIDS and some other immune system

deficiencies would be dropping from all kinds of cancers at greater rates than

the general population.

Part of the problem with cancers are they they are you, not an outside invader.

A revved up immune system that attacked you would be just as dangerous as

cancer.

The causes of cancer are very complex. I don't mean that you shouldn't try to

understand them, but you should be suspcious of anyone offering a tonic that

cures " cancer. " The milk drink that is discussed sounds very much like

quackery.

allergies is the same thing that I have read before, ie. an overactive

immune system response to minor irritants.

with lymphocytic thyroiditis (which many of us here have also had). The

immune system mistakenly recognizes a benign substance as being " dangerous "

and overreacts to it, causing the allergic reaction. In lymphocytic

thyroiditis, the immune system is reacting to the body's own thyroid cells

and destroying them. Definitely a malfunction of the immune system, but NOT

being caused by a " deficient " immune system. This is why those of us with

thyca who are also diagnosed with lymphocytic thyroiditis have a better

prognosis--because our immune systems are working that much harder on

invaders. So, I don't see allergies as a weakness or a deficit at all--a

pain in the butt YES!!
