Terry, do you have the ability to delete Kim's message from the server? My software caught it, but some others may not. It looks like one of those that mails to everyone in your address book, and if we delete it, we can stop the rest of the list from getting infected.

Your last e-mail came to the list infected with a virus. Better run a virus scan and disinfect!

> I can delete the message, but those who are receiving individual e-mails will

have already received it. The digest strips all attachments, so it won't go to

digest subbers. I don't know if it can be downloaded from Web Only or not.

Terry,

Why can't you just set the list to not accept attachments? That might seem

like a pain some of the time, but it'd keep viruses from being perpetuated

through attachments. (Thank goodness I run Linux instead of Windows.)

Do you have you virus software set to scan e-mail? If not, you would not detect it unless you open the message attachment. Then your virus file scan should pick it up. This is not one of the new viruses, so you should be protected.

I also assume your virus definitions are up to date; no more than 2 weeks old.

If you are set to 'no attachments' on e-mail, that would also prevent this virus download.

Terry,

I did not get a warning on any e-mail from kim today...

How do I know if I got the virus or not?

I thought she did, after the Nimda virus was going around [and infected her

server].

Carol,

I think the virus that came from Kim's post was one that you have to actually open. Don't open any attachments that came from Kim's posts. Be sure to go to your virus protection website and download the latest updates, and then do a virus scan. Everyone should always keep the virus protection up to date. I have mine check for updates every day, and I run a full virus scan on my laptop once a week.

I did that for a while when the Nimda virus first surfaced. It was so nasty that I felt it warranted shutting off attachments until anti virus software companies developed a fix for it. Doing no attachments will not allow people to post pictures or a lot of the other stuff we seem to be so fond of sending. I do have our List set so that Digests do not include attachments, so if anyone is concerned about becoming infected from the lists, Digests would be a good option for them.

I really think that each of us should make an attempt to learn how to keep ourselves from being infected, and also how to keep from infecting others. It's not difficult, and it's such good nettiquette. There's a lot of very low cost, even free, virus protection out there.

And my standard advice is always this . . . never, never, never under any circumstances open any e-mail attachments unless you know for certain beyond any doubt whatsoever what they are beforehand. Don't let your curiosity get the better of you. I always figure that if I don't know what it is first, then I can live without seeing it. I just will not take any chances with my system. I can live without seeing some cute e-mail thing-a-ma-jig. I NEVER open any attachment that is an executable file. I have my anti virus software set to scan each e-mail as it is downloading. I update the software daily. If I get infected, it'll probably be because I do something stupid, or because (like the Nimda virus) it was designed to infect me without having to be executed.

I think President Bush's war on terrorism should extend to tracking down cyber-virus creators. They should all be hoisted by their petards and swing in the breeze until death or old age, whichever comes first.
