Hi Joyce

I just got back from Belgium post op 12-13 days so not far behind you .The

bandages will be coming off tomorrow night and all the wound looks

completely healed . I am feeling pretty good. Dr. DeSmet told me I could

drive my car as soon as I got home and have been doing that with no trouble

at all. One has to be carefull getting in and out of the car but would have

to do that as a passenger any way. Our physiotherapist Marc gave us all a

sheet of exercises to do twice a day for the next several weeks which I will

pass on to you. He also told me to ride a stationery bike every day and to

swim at the pool. One of the things he cautioned against was doing too much

but you also have to be careful not to do too little. I asked him about

going to a Physiotherapist in Canada but he advised against it and told me

to continue with the exercises that we had been doing at the Holiday Inn for

the past week. Here are the exercises... repeat each one until feeling a

little uncomfortable. Don't overdo it!! Good Luck.

Two Weeks

Hi, folks. I am now 2 weeks post-op from the left hip resurf. I have

very little pain, mostly some incision sensitivity and a bit of a

deep bruise in the butt muscle. I'm walking on crutches, but usually

use only one crutch when I'm home. Two when I'm out on the town. I

cannot get over the lack of pain in my left hip joint. It's a total

miracle. The only glitch I've had so far is an acute reaction to

morphine. Whew! Panic attacks that felt like the hounds of hell were

tailgaiting me so closely I could feel their hot breath. Thank God

that seems to be over. My question is (and I know there is probably

lots of archival info): what sort of abilities can I expect at 2

weeks and then 3 weeks? I do NOT want to over-do things, but I don't

want to let time go by while I might be gaining strength in my left

leg. What's reasonable to expect? I tend to automatically " favor " my

left leg and remind myself to actually put weight on it. Maybe 75%?

I am so very grateful to have this ordeal behind me and to be on the

mend. I intend to have this sucker last longer than my life span!!

And I plan to live to be an eccentric old woman!

My operation was on Feb4th and Marc started the exercises on Feb 7th.

Activated elevation from the operated leg with a STRAIGHT knee was not

possible for me the first day. Marc gave assistance on some of the exercises

namely(Active mobilization of the foot))Active abduction from the operated

leg on a plastic bag)(Combined active flexion from the hip and knee and

make an active extension against resistance) The rest you can do without

assistance from a third party! Hope this helps!!

Ken

My operation was on Feb4th and Marc started the exercises on Feb 7th.

Activated elevation from the operated leg with a STRAIGHT knee was not

possible for me the first day. Marc gave assistance on some of the exercises

namely(Active mobilization of the foot))Active abduction from the operated

leg on a plastic bag)(Combined active flexion from the hip and knee and

make an active extension against resistance) The rest you can do without

assistance from a third party! Hope this helps!!

Hi Jim:

I was wondering at what point you will be riding the stationary bike

and swimming. They both seems like excellent circulatory and

cardiovascular exercises. Howevr, I was wondering about the joint

interaction on the bike. The reason I ask is that I am hoping to get

resurfaced in late March and want to get a feel as to how long it

will take before I can at least get on an exercise bike if not my

road bike.

Hi Diane

I posted the exercises a couple of days ago . Here is a copy of the message.
