Guest guest
We are using PT. We have some drop foot going on- so we are working on that. Plus, we had to narrow his base. I have had four different PT's in the past 1.5 years and they all have done some stretching and some gross motor activities. Just my thought...can't hurt. Physical Therapy Was wondering what the concesus is regarding physical therapy. I know it's not prescribed as necessary under the Ponseti method. However, can it help improve flexibility and possibly help prevent a relapse when used in conjuction with the dbb? I'm curious to know if anyone here is using PT for their children and your feelings about it. Thanks for your feedback... mom to Sophia 12/8/03 bi cf
Guest guest
When I asked Dr. Ponseti about this he said that everyday kicking, pushing, pulling up, then walking are PT enough for Zach's clubfoot. I'm not sure if this is specific to his foot, or if it can be generalized to all clubfeet. Guest guest
Vinny had two PTs. One at the hospital who worked with the manipulation of his feet and helped explain to us what was going on and different things we could do at home to help Vinny. They have seen many children, clubfoot and otherwise, who were casted at very young and infant stages. These children ended up with posture problems and other developmental difficulties later. Nichole (the hospital PT) pushed hard for tummy time even though Vinny was completely against it. Showed us different distractions to get him to look up when on his tummy as well as excercises for after the casts were off. His home PT, Miriam made sure we did what we needed to ensure he didn't have any problems. One problem he did have, was once he learned to roll over (which took alot of work for him with the casts), he only rolled one way. Something we didn't pay much attention to until I noticed one side of his torso sort of sagged and bulged. He had no muscle tone on that side. So a new exercise regimen was put together to force him to use the weak side. Now he's just fine and home therapy was cancelled with the exception of social visits. I think the use of a PT is wonderful. They are also better at explaining EXACTLY what you are doing when you bend this part this way and why you should or shouldn't do something. If you have the availability of a PT I would take it. If not for anything other than an alternate source for information and help. Guest guest
I did not have a doc's referral to get Tyler into first steps. I just contacted them myself and they came out to do the evalutation. They checked with Tyler's doc to make sure that it would not do any damage or hurt anything, but as far as getting in touch with them I did that. Tyler is doind so much better too! Plus first steps is a great program to get into. Until Tyler started PT he would only stand up when holding the couch, chair, ect. Now he is taking steps and has learned how to get up on his own. He hasn't really taken off yet but think he will soon. Tyler's mom bi lat cf 1/14/03 > I was wondering.
