Guest guest
Hi, Carole & Kristopher- It's good to hear from you! Did you ever get a chance to meet up with Dorothy & Amelia in Hawaii? I'm sorry that you're struggling with in-toeing and finding shoes. I have 3 suggestions- 1) check out the files section on the board, there's a file called " common causes of intoeing " that was posted by Dr. son. If you go through the archives (you'd have to scroll way back to the year 2000 posts) you can see the messages related to these discussions about in-toeing. 2) send video and/or pictures to Dr. Ponseti of Kristopher's feet (I would also include a picture of him in his FAB and later follow up with a photo of your new boot orthotic for the daytime). 3) check out this company: www.preschoolians.com to get custom fitted shoes for Kristopher's feet- not sure if this will help or not. Hope this helps somewhat! & (3-16-00) left clubfoot, switched to Ponseti method at 4 mo. old > Aloha All:) > > It has been a very long time since I have written to the post...I do read them !! > I was hoping to find someone who has had, or is having problems with the front of the feet turning inward? > We just got back from Shriners today here in Hawaii, and had his doctor look at his feet to make sure they are not in relapse. > I was concerned because there were no shoes out there that would fit him because his feet are curved in...not to mention the comments from shoe store people asking if I had taken my son to a specialist for his feet! > It has been hard to get any shoes on him at all because he still hates his night time shoe's:) > Anyhow, he is not in relapse, but we did go to the Orthotic and he made molds of both feet up to the knee, and will be making a plastic boot like brace with soles on the bottom. He will be wearing these during the day ( no set time frame) > Has anyone gone through this? My main concern was the combination of him having the front of the feet turning in, also he has a hard time walking and running...he falls every third step, and if he runs he scrapes his little toe, the nail is almost gone. But the kick in the butt was when he outgrew the 3 wide soft boot shoe (can't remember the brand name) and we needed something for him to wear whenever we would go out....My findings were nothing! > I had nothing to put on him so I started getting the robeez soft leather bootie type shoes ( 1 pair would last 2 weeks) they would get all torn up in the front so fast...we tried Velcro style sandals, but his feet would shift off to the sides and he would walk on the outer part of his feet....and they tripped him too. So, he runs bare foot and free for now:) > I don't even know what those corrective boot shoes are called? > Any advise on these things? Guest guest
Hi Carole, Our daughter's relapse started with intoeing, quickly moving onto the entire forefoot turning in. She also was tripping alot. We had to warn her continually as she started running that she had to slow down. Corrected feet should not be that way. Does the wear pattern on the bottom of your son's shoes show on the outside instead of the back? My advice (as a parent who has been through this) would be to have your son looked at by a strongly recommended Ponseti doctor if not Dr. P himself. Since your doctor is using foot orthotics other than the FAB, I would guess that they are modifying the method. Dr. P does not feel that AFO's or KFO's can maintain correction. We also trusted a local doctor out of our Shriner's who was telling us that our daughter was not relapsing. Of course she was, but he was counting on doing an ATTT to correct the problem down the road. WHich she ended up needing since we did not try recasting in time. It could be that if his feet are not fully corrected that this is a big reason for his hatred of the FAB. If this is what is happening your best bet is early intervention if you want to achieve correction with re-casting. HTH, please keep us posted, - Emma 18-10-99. Montreal, Canada moderately severe bilateral clubfoot 3 months unsuccessful local casting pending surgery corrected by Dr. Ponseti with 3 casts & tenotomy out of FAB too early, just before 2 yrs old (loose ligaments) relapse, ATTT at 4 years old, doing great. toes turning inward Aloha All:) It has been a very long time since I have written to the post...I do read them !! It has been hard to get any shoes on him at all because he still hates his night time shoe's:) Anyhow, he is not in relapse, but we did go to the Orthotic and he made molds of both feet up to the knee, and will be making a plastic boot like brace with soles on the bottom. Guest guest
Hi there Carole! I just wanted to share our experience with intoeing. My daughter Olivia who is now 2.5 years old started " intoeing " along with tripping about six months ago. She has been out of her brace completely for just over a year because of loose ligaments at the suggestion of her ortho. We asked her doctor (also a Shriner's Hospital doctor) about it at her appointment four months ago and he told us that it was not a relapse, but was " normal intoeing. " At her check up last month, the intoeing had gotten worse and an X-ray showed that her forefoot was turning in. She had not yet begun to walk on the outside of her foot and the doctor again told us that it was NOT a relapse, but that she may need the ATTT in about a year. We decided to trust our instincts and contacted Dr. Ponseti. He looked at her foot a week and a half ago and she is now in her first cast to correct what is indeed a relapse. She will need at least one, possibly two more casts to achieve correction again and then will definitely go back into her brace. I am so glad that we decided not to trust our ortho's opinion on the intoeing as it would certainly have led to a needless ATTT surgery in our case. Good luck and I hope that you can find some good fitting shoes soon! Jen & Olivia (born 10-18-01 severe left clubfoot treated at 4.5 months old by Dr. Ponseti with 4 casts and a tenotmoy with follow- ups at Shriners, full time brace wear for one month following last cast and about a year at nights only before discontinuing brace due to loose ligaments. Relapse at 2.5 years old. Currently in first cast to correct relapse.) It does sound like > Aloha All:) > > It has been a very long time since I have written to the post...I do read them !!
