Guest guest
I just read an article in our local paper that NY is now monitoring BG levels in diabetics. The city is requiring labs to report results of all A1c tests to the health department within 24 hours. This is SUPPOSED to improve care for diabetics. This has already started. Personally, I don't like it. What are they going to do with this info? And, one thing we all know is that all diabetics are not the same but we will get lumped into one category. I think this is an invasion of privacy and I am just blown away by this article. Guest guest
This sort of thing serves a legitimate public health interest when applied to infectuous diseases, but not to something like diabetes. NY has a VERY active ACLU chapter, which will be all over this like, to use the old country expression, a duck on a june bug. That being said, the thought of diabetes FINALLY being taken seriously as a public health matter by SOME authority is certainly gratifying at some level, even if they are taking such a wrongheaded approach. Guest guest
Hmmm...I guess I would also like to know what reasoning is behind this. It's not like we have a sexually transmitted disease, some of which have to be reported by law. And we are not contagious! Hmmmm..let us know what more you find out about this. Guest guest
I don't agree with this either. This will just keep some people who are worried about their privacy from having their a1c tested. Mindy > > I just read an article in our local paper that NY is now monitoring BG levels in diabetics. Guest guest
About NY monitoring, the article stated and I quote: " The NY effort marks the first time any government has required routine reporting of laboratory tests for a major chronic noninfectious disease so that government officials can scrutinize how well doctors and patients are treating a disease. " I find this intrusive. What are they going to do with the information - will it be used if you apply for a job? Will they come to your home and tell you what to eat, how to exercise or threaten to cut off your insurance if you don't get your A1c down? As was mentioned, I would not go for my A1c test if I thought the results were going into the government's hands. I would buy the home kit and do it in the privacy of my home. Guest guest
I would venture a guess that they are not recording your name, just the number when they send in the stats. > > About NY monitoring, the article stated and I quote: > > " The NY effort marks the first time any government has required routine reporting of laboratory tests for a major chronic noninfectious disease so that government officials can scrutinize how well doctors and patients are treating a disease. Guest guest
You know , I get the feeling it goes deeper than just gathering info. They already have the stats on diabetes and that is why they are so concerned. It also states that some managed health care plans have begun gathering info about chronic diseases and notifying doctors and patients when care could be improved. I think the govt is worried about this disease and the huge costs involved. Again, JMHO. If I had a scanner, I would scan it in, but I don't and it is too long to type.
