And yes I agree - when they understand and want presents, that is a big deal! I can remember Mitchel opening one at our urging, (only 1/2 way) then wandering off to another room. I had no idea what was going on. Now practically the whole school new it was his birthday when it came around because he told everyone and was so geniunely excited. I won't get into the little bastards who didn't show up to his party. He did have fun anyway. Kerri

Guest guest
Great story, Salli and Happy Birthday, Putter!!!! Sissi The Seven Birthday Celebrations of Putter > When Putter turned one, I felt completely satisfied. I had four beautiful children, all perfect. My husband was less than perfect but I felt that I could cope with him. > > When Putter turned two, I felt pretty good. None of my kids had talked much before their second birthday, so I was genuinely not worried about Putter's lack of speech. At his two year checkup, I did mention it to the pediatrician and he asked if I wanted him evaluated. I said, " No, I know kids are sometimes slow to talk. " They asked if he understood what I said and I replied, " Well, if I tell him to shut the door, he shuts the door! " > > That was the only thing he did when asked and he quit doing it by the summer. > > I did notice that he didn't open any of his presents, but I told myself that he was just a baby. I ignored the fact that all my other kids had understood presents fairly well long before their second birthdays. > > When Putter turned three, he had no speech and he did not open his presents. I cried and cried and cried. I could not hide from myself that all normal three year olds love to open presents. > > I knew he had autism. Robbie was eleven days old and I knew that autism had to be treated with intensive interventions. I had no idea how I was going to accomplish that. It was a terrible birthday. > > When Putter turned four, I was prepared for the worst. I did not expect he would open his presents. I gathered his siblings and asked if we should even bother wrapping them. They all agreed that we should and, oh, joy, Putter opened THREE of them. I cried for joy on that day. > > Since that day, Putter's birthdays have been more occasions for joy than sorrow, but a bittersweet joy. > > When Putter turned five, we were comfortable with where we were. He let us sing " Happy Birthday, " a first, without screaming. He opened most of his presents. I loved Putter as he was and did not expect him to suddenly become NT, in fact, I loved MY Putter, the one who was actually there and who would have to vanish for there to be an NT child. > > When Putter turned six, he had a small birthday party and Kepler came over. Kepler ate tons of pizza; Putter ate the edges only, very carefully and daintily, and they ignored each other. It was fun. Putter dutifully opened his presents. > > Today Putter turns seven. He can read and write; he can talk, although not well. He is in a mainstreamed class, and is doing about as well as can be expected. > > But yesterday wrapped all Putter's presents and Putter went into my room just as he was finishing up and Putter followed ALL AROUND THE HOUSE clamoring for his presents. " Open presents! " he cried, " Presents! " > > Now THAT is a first! Yes, he has opened them before, but he has never shown much excitement until they were actually opened. > > Hooray! > > Salli > >
