Hi Joanne,

Sounds like you handled it the best way you could. Once they have

already had the surgery there is nothing the parent can do and I am

sure no parent wants to hear that there are better options after the

fact. It would tend to put them on the defensive. It is so great to

hear you are educating others on the method!

Should I start calling my Zoe " little " Zoe?? ;)

Joanne,

I would like to add my two cents here. In my town, we have a " social worker "

for lack of a better word who's job is to help young mothers learn to parent.

Pretty much anything early childhood, she is the person to see around here. She

approached me about Rose and asked when she was having surgery. I said we were

using a nonsurgical method and explained it. She got flat out beligerent with

me and said that surgery was how these kids were treated. They have casts, then

they have surgery and then they are okay! It was pretty unnerving! The only

other club foot child in town is about 7 years old and was treated surgically.

I have not made an effort to seek out his mom since the treatments are so

different and I do not want a repeat performance. The local doctors and our

public health nurse have been wonderful and are following her case with great

interest, but the so-called experts, well you have to watch out for them!

Joanne,

It's not only parents who you run across with a problem comprehending

clubfoot being corrected non-surgically. I'm still trying to meet

with Vinny's newest pediatrician who said that Vinny was

misdiagnosed... he didn't have clubfoot, and he knows this because

Vinny didn't have surgery. After all, surgery is the only way to

correct clubfoot. That was just over a month ago, and I've been

trying to meet up with him where we can talk about this and so far

nothing. Between each time Vinny has been to the ER for high fevers

or other problems associated with the weather changes, allergies,

etc. I haven't been able to meet up with him and getting an

appointment has been brutal. Our next appointment isn't until

August! In the mean time, I've been going through the different

orthopaedic offices and other departments of the hospital to make

sure the physicians and surgeons are aware of the Ponseti technique.

I was quite please to learn that the only pediatric orthopaedic

associated with this hospital has been compiling her patient

information to submit to Dr. Ponseti for review. She was surprised

that my pediatrician (associated with the same hospital) had such a

past-tense view of the treatment.

Well, that was long winded enough. I must be going... time to end my

day for a change!

Take care all!

Robin,

That's so discouraging to hear! Any time someone is professing to be

a specialist about something, it is his or her responsibility to keep

current in the field they are supposedly an expert in!

Glad that the people who are working more closely with you are

responsive and interested in learning something new!
