Hi ,

I whipped out Matt's OT assessment and had a couple of more points

that may work (if you're not sick of hearing this already!) :-)

1) Allow the child to do some work orally rather than having them

write/print it out.

2) Don't return written work to be copied over; the paper is often

not improved, and the frustration is increased.

3) Allow student to dictate answers to peers, tape recorders,

teachers, others.

4) Pair student for completion of written assignments.

5) For some students, it may be easier to copy from a model on the

desk, rather than from the board.

6) Fasten a cue card to the student's desk to remind of correct

letter formation (if this is a problem)

7) Experiment with different types of paper: - graph paper to

organize letter width and spacing; - dash-lined paper to help with

the size of letters; - raised lined paper (I have never seen this - I

would like to find this for Matt)for the student who has trouble

staying on lines); wider or narrower spaced lines, depending on the

child; - notebooks with coloured baselines. (I remember when I was is

high school, they had three-hold binder paper where the lines were

farther apart - I haven't seen it for years here, I wonder if they

still make it anymore??)

Some of these ideas may seem more age-appropriate for your son than

some of the stuff I told you about in my previous post, as our son is

going into Grade 7. Hope this helps. As for us Canadians having our

heads on straight, I'm sure Debby B. will agree with me that we often

don't feel like it, but thanks for the compliment. I like to think

that maybe it is because we are closer to the magnetic north pole -

the gravitational pull on the top of our heads helps to keep them

straight - but it doesn't explain what happens when our brains turn

to mush!! (lol) Don't worry, you'll get used to my " weird " sense of

humour after awhile (ah, and I just spelled " humour " the Canadian

way, with a " u " -- he-he).Gail P., the Crazy Canuck.
