Paint staying tips

I painted my daughter's band when we first got it while she was on her on/off

schedule, and

followed the advice of the document on this group site, but after just a week,

paint started to

chip and when some of the stickers on top of the paint came off, the paint just

started to

peel immediately forcing me to scrub it all off. Can the moms that paint the

helmets offer me

some advice for things that have may worked better? I used Kilz for a base,

acrylic paint, and

then a few coats of satin varnish. I did apply the stickers on top of all that,

so I might try

paint, followed by stickers, then varnish. Also wondering how you manage to

paint in the 1

hour off period. Or do you leave it off under you're done?

Thanks for any help you can offer!

I've painted my son's helmet 4 times, every three weeks. The worst

parts that can peel for us are the " caps " that come up higher on his

head. He tends to scrape those edges as he's crawling around and

under things. But over all, the paint job stays really well. I

mainly change it because I get tired of it. I don't use any primer.

I just paint it with acrylic paint using a foam brush, 3-5 coats

depending on how it covers. Then I put the stickers on, then I cover

it all with mod podge, usually 3 coats to start. Then each week,

I'll add another coat of mod podge just to freshen it up (the shiny

coat can get dull after sleeping on it). Once you paint it that way,

there's no way of removing the stickers and replacing them without

painting the whole thing again.

The whole paint process for me takes an hour and half. I use an

oscilating fan to dry it between coats to speed up the process, and

I do it all in one sitting. I leave it off him for only a half hour

the day before and after I paint it to make up for it.

Hope that helps!
