Hi all. Looking to get my hip done asap in Vancouver BC (canada) by Dr.

Duncan. Have heard great things about him and resurfacing. Still trying to

decide between resurfacing and replacement.... any thoughts?

Well Mark-

There is absolutely no comparison in my mind between a resurface and a hip

replacement. With resurfacing you maintain the dynamics of the natural hip

joint. You owe it to yourself to do some more investigation. Start with

's web site; www.activejoints.com. Look at all of the links as well. Good

luck.

Mark,

Resurf - it's better for active people - less risk of dislocation -

and it promises to last longer, possibly a lot longer than a

replacement. You can always have a replacement later if (big if) a

resurf fails. With a replacement you cannot have a subsequent resurf.

Two cents from me.

Chris.

In a word - RESURFACING.

There should be no question about it. if you qualify for resurfacing -

do it!

If your doctor says you don't qualify - find another surgeon that

does resurfacing and see if that one will qualify you.

Despite what some greedy non-resurfacing-trained surgeons may try to

convince you about doing a THR (and that's because the economics of

the THR surgery make it rather lucrative for them), only do a THR as

a last resort. From the resurface, you can later to a THR (in the

unlikely event that you will need it). From the THR, you can only do

another THR. There are no resurfacing options once you've done the

THR.

Don't just trust what any surgeon tells you. There are many resources

on the internet (this group site being the best of them) for you to

educate yourself and make an informed decision. There is also a THR

group site. (called " totallyhip " ). Read those postings from the

people who have done THR and compare with the resurfacers, especially

with respect to post op recovery speed, and activity level.
