Hi Rainer

I don't know if this would work with Dr Kim, but I got in to see Dr Smit in

White Rock, B.C., in June for a consult by paying $250.00 myself. His secretary

said it somehow bypassed MSP (our OHIP), but wouldn't compromise MSP paying for

the surgery. Otherwise I would have had to wait until November. As it was, he

said my hip was too bad for him to do a resurf on, and tried to talk me into a

THR. DeSmet had already seen my xrays and given me the okay, but I had been

hoping I could get it done here and avoid the cost of going to Belgium. No such

luck.

The other thing is that I know people in B.C. who have had Dr Kim do the

surgery and they just had to send their xrays to him, without having to go there

twice - once for a consult and once for surgery. Has he already seen your

xrays?

Sharry

Re: what should I do?

The surgeon and his experience is very important to me. Does anyone

have a rundown of the number of resurfs that the U.S. surgeons have

done compared to DeSmet?

For that matter, since I live in Ontario, any numbers for Canadian

surgeons involved in the trials?

I'm still waiting for my appt with Dr. Kim in Ottawa but it's

becoming a really long stretch to January or February 2004 (been

waiting since June for a date) and my knee and back are taking a lot

of punishment lately because I'm favouring (that's Canadianese for

favoring, eh) my hip so much.

For other Ontarians: is there no way that OHIP will cover out-of-

province services if I have to wait so long here?

Hi Rainer

So does this mean you get the surgery in Jan or Feb? I think it was

from B.C. who had a bi-lat from Dr Kim and was very pleased. But she

didn't have to show up for a consult and then wait for a surgery date - he saw

her xrays, told her she was a candi;date, and she just flew out to Ottawa after

that for the operation, having never neededd to see him in person. Sounds like

he has a different method for those of you in Ontario?

Hi Rainer

I agree with you about your concern for lack of experience with resurfs by

an OS. Even if the nice OS in White Rock had accepted my case, I'm not sure if

I'd have let him do it, as he had only done 3 at that time. I don't think I

will ever forget Dr De Smet saying that his first 100 resurfs were 'a learning

curve'....btw, Dr De Smet is very conscientious about aftercare for overseas

patients, as that was a really big concern of mine too. If he thinks anything

could go wrong, he prearranges things for his overseas patients, as much as is

possible, like speaking to an OS here to arrange for local supervision. Maybe

the OSS' in Britain do that too.

Please just don't wait too long....I gather that I barely made it in time,

what with a Canadian doc turning me down as my hip being too far gone.

Hi Sharry,

Actually come to think of it, when I first talked to Sylvia at Dr.

Kim's office after Dr. Kim had okayed me for the surgery, I got the

impression that my appt with Dr. Kim was for surgery. I thought it

was unusual not to have a consultation first so I thought I must have

imagined that scenario. But maybe....

Still I would not go to surgery without having a consultation with

Dr. Kim first, even if it meant moving out the surgery even further.

So my appt in Jan/Feb is for a consultation -- I'd like

to 'interview' Dr. Kim to see if I'm comfortable with him, e.g. his

experience, his thoughts on re-surfacing, etc.

Naturally the fact that OHIP would cover the surgery is very

attractive and also the fact that any post-op problems can be dealt

with without going out of the country. Even though he may be a good

OS, my biggest concern may be his lack of re-surfs done compared to

others like DeSmet, Amstutz, McMinn.

Hi Rainer

De Smet already gave me a date for surgery ahead of time (yes, really!)

when I emailed him in early June, for 27 Aug 03, subject to seeing my xrays and

approving me. So then I fedexed him my xrays, which were followed by the

longest 4 days of my life, waiting for them to get to him, and then he emailed

me back that they were fine. This guy doesn't fool around - he emails back

himself, usually within 4-5 hours of my having emailed him.

I know what you mean about not having been to the gym for so long - I was

pretty jockish before the pain got just too bad, about 2-3 years ago (it's hard

to rermember exactly when, as I gradually gave up one activity after another

over time, as they became too painful- first aerobics and running, then cycling,

then even swimming). I actually miss the gym, and hated being a couch potato,

and am looking forward to adding back those activities, in reverse order,

starting with swimming....which has always been my passion And I forgot another

fave - hiking - we live on a small acreage in the country here in the Okanagan,

and I hope that by next summer I'll be strong enoough to do some serious hiking.

I know what you mean about working out hanging over your head, all the time.

This time around I am not going to push it.

Funny thing, my knees never gave me any grief until after surgery - they

have kicked up quite a fuss this past two months - getting repositioned I think.

So perhaps you'll have less trouble with that left one, post-op.

Let me know how you're doing and what you decide.
