Guest guest
I am also possibly looking into Dr. De Smet Do you happen to know how follow-ups are handled? Is there a Doc in the states whom you'll be doing follow-ups with? Has Dr. De Smet given you any idea of the cost of the procedure? Thanks Re: Resurfacing with Dr. De Smet on March 3rd Dear , I too am like you very grateful for all the support and great knowledge I have found with these " hippies. " Unlike you, I do not yet have a date with Dr. De Smet...I hope to hear from him by the 23rd or 24th as I have sent my xrays and medical history. I have submitted my passport application and checked on tentative airline flights. I am very excited for you. I have not heard of any others on this website who are going over when you are. I have only been on this site now for 2wks, so I am a little afraid that I may be missing some of the arrngements or details that I that I need to consider. I am interested in the file you have compiled. I have ordered Peggy 's book and am anticipating its arrival. Sincerely, Dawn > Hi All! > > I am so grateful to all of you for sharing your experiences on this site. Without you, I would not have found Dr. De Smet! You all helped me realize that this is my LIFE, after all. For less than the cost of a used car, I can have it back! If I get reimbursed after the fact, so much the better, but insurance coverage stopped being the determining factor for me. I have all of you to thank for that! > > I've compiled a file of useful tips to review before I leave for Belgium, ranging from how to pee standing up on the airplane to how to set up a 10/16 phone tree. I actually found the sweatpants Dr. Steve mentioned, at Sam's ---for $14.81, men's sizes only. But hey, for the price, I bought the only 2 pairs they had in a medium! Still looking for those California Crazee Wear Baggies! Despite your advice, Dr. Steve, I decided I'd feel too weird going without underwear at all, so I bought some XL boxers, also at Sam's! I'll report back on how that works out for the prospective lady surfacehippies out there! > > I don't recall reading that anyone else from this site is scheduled with Dr. De Smet on March 3rd or 4th. Anybody out there? I hope so! > > Warmest Regards, > Przygoda > rBHR De Smet 03/03/2004 > > > >
Guest guest
Hi , Dr. De Smet asks that you e-mail him with your progress and/or problems postop. He also wants a followup x-ray 1 or 2 years postop. As far as I know, he does not require you to have a local OS do any followup after you return home. Maybe some of the Belgium surfacehippies have postop followup experiences they can share. Worst case scenario, you might be flying back to Belgium, I guess. I was originally planning to have Dr. Amstutz at the JRI do my resurfacing, and he wants you see a local OS to do your six- week followup, and forward results to him. I found a very supportive OS who was interested in the procedure and willing to do my followup. I still plan to see her after I get back from Belgium because she has been so supportive of this, and because I will need a medical release to return to work. The standard cost of a unilateral hip is 10,500 Euros, approximately $13,000 US dollars, depending on the exchange rate. This includes the surgeon's fee, hospital stay, clinic costs, rounds by the nurses, physical therapist and Dr. De Smet, both in the hospital and afterward during your recovery in the Holiday Inn....everything essentially, except the accomodations at the Holiday Inn (85 Euros/night, special rate for De Smet patients). 10,500 Euros is the base price. Most Belgium surfacehippies who have posted here seem to have received a refund of about $700 after all the costs specific to their stay have been totaled. The same surgery in the States runs around $25,000. Dr De Smet's web site is www.hip-clinic.com . Check out, esp. the section for Overseas Patients, then explore from there. His e-mail is koen.desmet@... . Hope this helps. P.
