I am looking for information about where in South Africa I can get

the Birmingham resurfacing procedure done and how much it will cost.

On the midmedtec.co.uk website, they mention a surgeon named Spike Erasmus in

Cape Town. I was in South Africa a few days ago and someone mentioned his

name to me as being a competent surgeon, but I have no other information about

him. There may be other people doing resurfacing there but he is the only one

mentioned by the manufacturers of the BHR.

My mother had a THR just over a year ago at age 89 by a well-known, highly

competent orthopod in Johannesburg. I quizzed him about resurfacing and he gave

me the old " the ions are bad for you " blurb. He also had an old version of the

prosthesis in his desk drawer which he showed me. I demonstrated my

range of movement to him (I was 4 months post-op) and he was impressed but went

back to the ion thing.

I suppose someone needs to do a definitive study about ions and wave it in

their faces before they'll grudgingly concede the value of resurfacing. I was

frankly quite surprised because I respect South African physicians highly. After

all the first successful heart transplant was performed there in 1967.

Hi

Suggest you get in touch with the manufacturer of the resurface joint. They

don't tend to list the surgeons who use them as there is some head hunting

going on by new manufacturers. They will give you an OS who you could see.

The website will give you

contact details :

For BHR:
