Guest guest
I'm 50 with a resurf. I'm also a very competitve athlete in Time trial and Duathlon. I'm 30 weeks post-op and I have returned to running. I'm only running a couple miles a week until I'm a year post-op at which time I will increase my mileage to 12-15 miles/week. I've been cycling 200-300 miles per week since 12 weeks post-op with no ill effects. I have my Doctors permission to run again as long as I keep the hip capsule strengthened. Just do it..... Guest guest
I'll be two years post op this Dec 17th and am into my 2nd year back as USSF referee in Michigan Youth Soccer up to U18. I ran four matches Sunday, man was I tired. But I'm up and walking today, although my muscles were achy (duh) I hunt and fish often in some of the hilliest country of northern Michigan and nothing holds me back. And I also work construction. But make sure to get good refs if you want to keep playing. Nothing like a cheap hack to put you back in surgery. Go resurf! Guest guest
Thanks Edith I appreciate your answer. It seems so " simple " . The topic of the hip capsule & stress had just come up in conversation with me and then I saw the post mentioning keep it strong. I needed some clarification. I will continue my swimming, pool exercise, & Pilates. :-) Thanks again alyce C2K - W. Kennedy - 5-23-

Guest guest
Hi alyce, In one word - exercise...............smile............... That is why I do my swimming......... with few muscles to begin with people like me have to just work away until there is a reasonable stock and then keep them there....... So you are looking at either specific gym type exercises designed to keep the muscles around the hip strong and/or go swimming...........for that will do it without too much contrivance.......... Guest guest
Jim, I tried e-mailing you privately, but it was returned " undeliverable " . You came and introduced yourself to me at Sinai on Sept 10. I had my resurfacing on the 9th and I wanted to tell you how much I appreciated the visit and words of encouagement. I am doing well. I find that everyday I am able to do something that I couldn't do the day before. I am getting stronger every day and only wish I could sleep through the night. I am looking forward to my 6 week check-up on Oct 21... Thanks Again and I hope all continues to be well for you. Tracey Karl C+ 9/9/03 Mont > I'm 50 with a resurf. Need advice from your experiences. Thanks If you go with a resurf, you only have a few choices for implants - the 's conserve, corin's cormet 2000, and the birmingham (offered in canada and overseas.) As far as I know, they are all metal on metal. We are usually not restricted from any activities at all other than bungee jumping and parachuting, once the hip has completely healed. " Some " say the c/c THR's may give you the same results, but overwhelming opinion here is that young people who have so much living yet to do are best with a resurf, as it conserves bone, in the event a THR is necessary down the road. Why chop it off if there's nothing wrong wth it? Even if you are allowed to resume your soccer playing (with a THR, that is), with your level of activity, you're very likely to wear out a THR much too early. Revisions typically don't last as long as the original THR, and you'll run out of bone long before you are ready to give up your activity. Those reports on the c/c THR are encouraging, but they are not any more proven for longevity yet than resurfs. Too new. Some of the large head MoM THR's are reported to have fewer restrictions than the traditional ones, but once again, there's that loss of bone issue. The jury is still out on the longevity of the resurfs, but many of us are betting that they just may last a LONG time - maybe lifetimes. In any case, resurfs buy us predominantly painfree, highly active lives that we can live NOW. We don't have to wait, crippled, watching our muscles atrophy and watching life go by without us till we can't stand it any more and THEN have a THR. I guess you can tell how biased I am. I'm 9 weeks post-op, thrilled as could possibly be, in no pain and back to my active life. Life is good again. And I'm willing to bet I'll have this hip for a good, long time.
