Janie,

I know that Dave Daily Had some contact with Dr Sparling- Dave is form Edmonds,

WA. He did end up at Dr Boyds in Salem, OR however. When I was doing my own hip

research I tried on several occasions to contact him- he never returned a call.

I also live in WA state- north of Spokane. Good luck.

Has anyone had experience with resurfacing doctors in Washington

State? The only name I am aware of is Dr. Ed Sparling in Vancouver,

Thanks,

Dave,

I live in Seattle. I have not contacted Dr. Sparling yet. Please tell

about your recent experience. I'm currently in the process of trying

to figure out what to do (conventional THR vs. resurfacing)and who to

go to.

I would appreciate your advice/experience.

Thanks very much.

janie,

There are quite a few people that have used Dr. Boyd in Salem Ore.

that frequently use this web site. I am going down on the 14th of the

mo. for a 9wk post op check. Would be most happy to answer any

questions about Salem Hospital and dr. Boyd. . Tug

Dear Jane:

Both Tug and I have follow ups w/ Dr. Boyd on Jan 14, 2004.

I was diagnosed with OA right hip in February (14) of 1995. I was told this

was 'serious,' as I was a marathon runner, mtn climber, expedition climber,

etc. My doc is really good, and told me to wait as long as possible, I

would 'know' when I need hip surgery.

Each year got worse, and each year I had follow up exams. I quit running,

climbing, skiing, etc. and took up mtn biking and motorcycle riding.

Finally, last year was 'it.'

I was told about resurfs by a friend w/ a Swiss wife, and started my

research. 100's of pages later, I started calling and meeting folks, like

Judy Toelle, and gathering first hand info. Even though anecdotal evidence

is the least statistically reliable, it gave me a feel for the research

others were doing.

I had seen Herring, , Holland, Crutcher, talked w/ DeSmet, saw

Sparling, , and finally Boyd. Sports Orthopedics, Swedish Hosp.

Seattle Orthopedic, Rebound Orthopedics, Salem Orthopedics...

Every doc gave the same diagnosis, but , Crutcher, Holland were

firm for a THR, and a sedentary lifestyle.

was for a ceramic/ceramic lifetime prothesis, but NO impact for fear

of cracking. (I would be his first ceramic/ceramic!)

Sparling was very solid, but was a fence-sitter as per the AMA/FDA clinical

trial requirements. He has a good track record with resurfs. A very serious

guy. His office processed my insurance claim three times... all rejected.

All of these Doc's are Washington State guys.

Boyd was data driven, professional, passionate and compassionate.

He processed my claim...

it was approved October 22. I had the surgery Dec 18.

Boyd is an Oregon guy.

Even with insurance pre-approved (no PPO's do resurfs in my insurance plan,

so I needed pre-approval), now that the bills are coming in, my Ins. claims

they will only pay part, since my Doc is not in the PPO group (catch-22??).

I remain convinced DeSmet is great. However, Boyd was awesome- and only a 5

hour drive from my home. Depending on the insurance, it may have turned out

to be cheaper to pay the insurance difference, fly to Ghent, and have DeSmet

do the job!!

Consider ALL your options, in a rational, data driven way.

If you can wait 6 months, do so. By then the device will be FDA cleared,

and the insurance issues will decrease or disappear.

I feel there is enough data to drive me to a resurf. Chances of dislocation

are much less, and if it fails, I still have bone left, and can get a large

ball THR.

Remember, as Gandhi said, there is more to life than increasing its speed.

Good luck

-Dave

Janie,

13 months ago I tried contacting Dr. Sparling but didn't get

a return phone call but did talk to Dr Boyd and a girl named

and both were very knowledgeable and friendly but I was denied

insurance coverage. So I paid cash and went to Dr. DeSmet and got

them both done at the same time (Boyd would do them 3 months apart).

I took a 9.5 hr flight on SAS directly to Denmark then Brussels

departing from Sea-Tac and was home in 10 days. Whereas, if I

would have drove to Eugene I would have have driven the 4.5hr

drive one-way 4 times to get both hips done.

So for me,Belgium was not that far away!

Also, having a Doc in another country for follow-up was kind

of a concern but hasn't been at all since the surgery,

I've been able to play basketball, snowboard(this was a first),

mow the lawn, roof a garage, iceskate(this was a first last

week and I got thrashed), squat and catch little league pitching,

and at the end of each and every single day I can still

drink beer and barbeque with a smile. best of luck with your

surgery. Jeff 2 bhr 1/21/03

Hi Janie,

I live in Washington (Olympic Peninsula) and went to see Dr.

Sparling around June/02. I had been off work as a UPS Driver for

over a month and was trying to line up my surgery. I had already

done the research and decided on resurfacing. I guess I'd just say

he was OK. He told me I needed to lose weight and start swimming

and try anti-inflamatories. I said but gee, I've already had two

opinions that it's time for surgery and after all, I can't work. He

said maybe he would see me again in three months. His office was

kind of a turn off; really huge with Disneyland type ropes for the

lines and many operators with headsets sitting behind counters.

I decided to contact Dr. Boyd and would have definately gone to him

but it was right about the time there was a hold on the C+ and I

would have had to wait too long. Soooo, I ventured out to inquire

about Doctors doing the Cormet 2000. I had an immediate response

from Reva in Dr. Stachniw's office in Galesburg, Illinois.

This is where I ended up and couldn't say enough about him. I had

the first done Sept/02 and second Jan 03.

Anyway, if I were you I would chose Boyd over Sparling (there I said

it)

Best luck,

Barb

Dear Dave,

Wow, thank you for all of this information. I really appreciate your

thoughts and suggestions. I've begun researching some options for my

right hip only for the past couple of months. At that time I was told

by Dr. Toomey (one of Crutcher's associates) that my hip is now

considered " advanced " with OA. Last official diagnosis (by a different

Dr.) was 2 yrs. prior. I have met and spoken with another person

living in Seattle who had 2 hips done by Dr. Boyd within the past

couple of years. She speaks very highly of him. From the few responses

I've received on this web site, I'm getting the impression that Boyd

is the Dr. of choice. I'm self employed, and have an individual plan

with Regence. Am wondering exactly where to start with that process. I

have been thinking that I would like to get the surgery done this

Winter so that I could put it behind me, but maybe the best thing

would be to wait until the FDA approval.

Thanks again for your help.

Dear Janie:

I would go to Boyd again.

Let the Dr. office handle the insurance issues.

Have an exam ASAP to determine if you are a candidate,

and determine if you need it right away.

You can wait too long, and have bad bone issues.

best regards,

Dave

Janie,

Are you enjoying the Seattle snow storm as we are.

My wife and I live in Kirkland and have about 3 " now.

Looks incredibly beautiful.

Boyd and Sparling haven't to my

knowledge had any problems with

Regence. They file all the necessary paper work.

I did contact Regence myself and found them very nice.

They told me that Boyd is one of there prefered providers

and with the policy I have: a $1500 deductable and a $3000 stop loss.

Thats what I would be responsible for.

Janie-

You are smart to do the research. I did the same. Talked to many people as

well as surgeons. In the end it is important to trust your choice. It takes

tremendous courage to decide on a procedure that is potentially so life changing

and also controversial. Going to Belgium was a shocker for my daughter who was

a student at the U of Washington. She has a medical background and thought I

was nuts. She accompanied me to Belgium and was incredibly impressed. I would

do it again. (She would urge me to do it again!)

I know I echo the thoughts of those who tell you not to wait too long.

Originally I had thought I would receive a periacetabular osteotomy and was

crushed when I was told I was no longer a candidate. It seemed like the end of

hope. This was, of course prior to finding out about resurfacing I can do

anything I want now. Incredible.

In fact isn't this weather crazy? I understand that your area has been quite

severely hit. It is not too bad here in Spokane.. I may go cross country skiing

tomorrow- my day off....

Take care,
