How exciting! What a huge accomplishment!! Congratulations, Tom!!

Barbara Mellert wrote: I had to share with

you that my son, Tom, who is 13 and deaf and now has

a cochlear implant, is a black belt! He tested on Friday, March 3 and

did a beautiful job. When he was awarded his belt, I couldn't stop

crying! I kept thinking about when he was diagnosed 10 years ago and

wondering if he'd be okay and how things would go for him. Wow! He's

one of the youngest black belts in our overall school and the youngest

in our particular chapter. I'm very proud!

Pictures are here:

Tom's in the 3rd, 4th and 34th picture (the one entitled Master Lee Gup

Poomse 6). He's wearing a headband to keep his implant processor on!

The first two are of Tom testing, the third is the next day (see the

happy expression on his fact that testing is over?!). he's sporting his

new dobak (uniform) and belt. The reason his belt is black and red is

that he's under 14.

Pretty exciting!

Hi - our local newspaper wrote a really nice article about my son, Tom

I think the writer really " got " Tom's cute/funny personality - it was fun!

Barbara, what a good story about Tom. I also liked how the CI was

described - not brain surgery.

I have been seeing the posts about Sam getting his implant, too. I bet

you're excited! Both boys are lucky to have you guys.

I just finished the story - that really was well written! And I love the angle

that deafness was not a barrier to Tom due to his character. What a great kid!

I've left it on the desktop so Maggie can read it later today, no school today.

What a great article. I was picturing Tom's grin as I read the article ... I

might have a few people he could " take care of " as well, LOL

And I thought was great that they presented the whole family as well. I'm

printing it out now for my kids to read.

Congrats!
