Shoulder X-Rays Today and Results...

Yes I had shoulder X-rays done today on th shuolder I dislocated

anteriorly and superiorly on 30th December in my sleep <DOH!>. My GP

wanted them done to rule out fracture from the dislocation and/or the

subsequent relocation (by my Osteopath about 30hr's later).

Well I had them and they were all clear EXCEPT for it said something

about the acromion being flat (is that normal??? or Not????)

The other thing it says is " There is minimal irregularity of the

greater tuberosity at the site of the supraspinatus tendon

insertion " .... Translation PLEASE ANYONE.... Now i know the greater

tuberosity is the large knobbly end of the humerus (next tot he

lesser tuberosity (the smaller lumpy bit at the end of the bone).

but where is the supraspinus tendon insertion??? and what does

mimimal irregularity mean??? is this the sign of a fracture that my

GP was looking for??? or is it a sign that I have avulsed (torn out)

ANOTHER ligament/tendon???? or is it something else????

It says the articular surfaces of the humerus and glenoid are NORMAL,

and no abnormality in relation to the AC joint is seen either.

any ideas anyone???? PLEASE.....

my pain is still pretty HIGH and I am finding that being in the

immobiliser sling sometimes makes my pai worse as it seems sometimes

my shoulder does NOT like being across my chest, it seems happier

when it is supported by pillows and in the forward position (i.e. my

shoulder and upper arm to elbow are against my side and my forarm and

hand are facing my knees (if I am sitting down) does that make sense

(I believe they call it the " gunslinger " position). Any ideas as to

WHY this would be so and what I can to about it???

I will call my GP tomorrow and tell him the results and see what to

do next. My Gp isn't interested in doing a MRI or anything (r wasn't

today) as he says that is something the OS should do but seeing as

the guy who did the capsular shrinkage on my shoulder in 2001 is from

Sydney and I can't see me getting in to see him for sometime I think

I need to demand a Mri to see what soft tissue damage there is to the

shoulder in the mean time so that it can be treated. Does this sound

reasonable????

I am pretty concerned that I have done some serious damage to my

shoulder this time.

Hi Sharon,

LoL - I knew all those hours pouring over shoulder x-rays with Mac

would pay off one day! Hope I can help you shed a bit of light on

your current report Darl.

Firstly, the flat acromion will probably be a part of the

arthroscopic repair you had on your shoulder as flattening the

acromion is a form of decompression/stabilisation commonly done in

arthroscopic surgery. As for the supraspinatus tendon, that attaches

to the top of the humerus head, (tuberosity) and runs along the top

of the shoulder under the clavicle, attaching to the far end of the

clavicle near the neck. It's basically the muscle/tendon that

produces sideways movement and keeps the shoulder in the socket

particularly when performing throwing actions.

The fact that x-rays show only minimal irregularity would suggest

that there is no sign of the tendon tearing form the tuberosity and

causing bony damage such a fracture or splintering - which is a good

sign! I think form the wording of the report, it's sounding more

likely that you have soft tissue damage and stretching of the

tendons/capsule to be honest. So maybe the MRI would be a good move

to see the extent of how the supporting structures are looking.

I hope this has helped a bit Sharon and put your mind at ease a

little - I'm no expert obviously and the doc will be able to give you

a much better idea of the readings when you see him. Good luck and

please let us know how you get on, I hope he will schedule an MRI for

you...if just for peace of minds sake. Thinking of you ad I'll write

properly soon.

Love and hugs....Jo
