Guest guest
amnios usually done at 12 weeks. Women over age 35 are advised to get one...the older you are, the higher the risk for Down's and Spina Biffoda, so it's just up to the mother. I had one...it wasn't bad at all. Best of luck! Guest guest
Haley, If you got the triple screen/AFP blood test and it comes back positive, your OB may want you to have an amnio. If you are over 35, you OB may want you to have an amnio. I do not ever get a triple screen done, because they have an extrememly high rate of false positives. I would suggest to someone to never get an amnio unless you are willing to terminate the pregnancy if there is a problem. One thing most doctors don't tell you is that you have a one in 200 chance of having a leak in amniotic fluid that does not heal or going into labor. I work in the number one delivering hospital in the nation and believe me, we see it. I am the type of person who would carry a baby to term, no matter what the problem. Even if the baby were not compatible with life. I figure if I terminate early, I take away the chance of God performing a miracle. I don't know if you know Hazel's story with her last child, but he has spina bifida and she was told it was so bad that he would probably die in utero from his brain being pulled down the the base of his skull. The perinatologist even got mad because she would not even discuss termination or an amnio. He was born with a sac on his back the size of his head and she was told he would never walk and probably not have bowel and bladder funtion. Well, guess what, he had surgery after he was born to repair the sac and he is perfect now. He walks and talks. He is about a year and a half. The bottom line is, there are major risks involved and you have to know, or at least have discussed with you dh, what you would do in a given situation. I feel like if God gives me a baby that I know won't live for more than a few minutes, who am I to second guess Him. If I mother a baby for 20 minutes, than at least that baby knew love while here on Earth. Sorry to be so long and preachy, but it is a subject I feel strongly about. Guest guest
Standard medical practice for an amnio is between 15 to 18 weeks. The sample of amniotic fluid contains cells from your baby's skin and other organs, which are grown and cultured in a lab before being analyzed. Results take up to two weeks. In most cases, the cells are cultured simply to provide a kind of map of fetal chromosomes. A fetus with Down syndrome, for example, will have three copies of chromosome 21 instead of the usual two. An amnio will also reveal the baby's sex -- valuable information for couples with a family history of gender-related genetic diseases. The fluid is also analyzed for abnormal AFP levels. There are several tests available to pregnant women which can be used to detect spina bifida before the baby is born. The most commonly used test is the maternal serum alpha fetoprotein (MSAFP) blood test which is done on the mother's blood around the 16th week of pregnancy. This test checks the level of protein (alpha fetoprotein) that leaks out of the developing brain and spinal cord into the fluid surrounding the baby. This protein is normally found in amniotic fluid, but the levels found are higher if the baby has spina bifida. This test is not specific for spina bifida, however. An error in the dates of the pregnancy, multiple babies, as well as other birth defects can all cause an abnormal reading. If the alpha fetoprotein level is abnormal, additional testing is recommended. ~ BabyCopia ~ Unique and Original Baby Products ~ Preggie Pops Now Available! ~ www.babycopia.com Re: Amnio Questions amnios usually done at 12 weeks. Guest guest
I had my amnio at 15.5 weeks and it was painless. I am 40 and will be 41 when I deliver. The results were a healthy girl. We have 2 boys. It is really up to the Mom and dad the risk for downs goes up with age so I decided to have one. It was really nothing at all. I was really nervous but it is nothing to be afraid of. Good luck with what ever you decide to do Juli EDD 11/21/
