Hi : Please see my answers below. Thanks.

> Hi there. Fun to see this group online. I have some questions as I am

beginning this diet. I am attempting to start it for the second time, the first

was thwarted(sp?) with a trip to the emergence room due to terrible bleeding

from my Crohn's disease.

My first attempt was also thwarted by having to go to the emergency room. The

Prednisone afterward didn't help much as it gave me terrible cravings for carbs

and I didn't know why.

> So here I go. Just 5 days in so far, and this time I am starting NOT in a

flare up, but at the end of a prednisone taper which was prescribed after my

trip to the ER. Since I am not in the middle of a flare, so not have symptoms

right now, I have pretty quickly jumped into things like nuts, veggies, etc. So

far so good, but my first question is if I am starting this right. I know that

starting IN a flare, you start with the very basic chicken soup, gelatin diet,

but I decided to dive in quicker this time. So question #1:

This is not good. The Prednisone is only masking your symptoms and when you come

off, you're symptoms will most likely return in full force.

> 1. If NOT in a flair up or showing symptoms, does one still need to follow

the 3-5 days " starter diet " ?

You need to start with the intro and work your way into the diet to give your

guts time to heal. I speak from TOTAL experience.

> Some more questions:

> 2. If your not in a flare up, do we still need to wait 3 months until we can

eat beans, lentils etc? (legal beans of course)

3 months is just a recommendation. I was on the diet for a year before I could

tolerate beans. I still don't tolerate a lot of nut flour products. Broccoli is

still a no-no. Everyone is different and different foods will trigger symptoms.

That's one of the whole points of the diet.... to take it slow and add foods

back in one at a time so you can find out what works best or worst for you.

> 3. In the initial 4-6 weeks of the diet, the book says you will know if the

diet is working for you. If you are also on meds, how do you know if the diet

is working, or is it just the meds?

If the meds are totally masking your symptoms, you won't know. I knew within

days that the intro diet was helping but I wasn't on meds and was in terrible

pain. I wasn't on meds because the doc told me they weren't working. If you are

on meds and still having some symptoms, you'll know because the symptoms you do

have will lessen.

> 4. regarding alcohol.. Obviously not a good idea to drink much on this diet or

with Crohns in general. But, if/when I do have drink now and then I want to be

sure I am doing it legally :) Anyone know if Rum &/or tequila are legal? Does

not say in the book or SCD website.

Distilled clear liquors are permitted. I have CD and do okay with Vodka, Gin,

Tequila and clear rum. Also, dry red wine with no added sugars are acceptable.

Italy, Australia, and California have laws that prohibit the addition of sugar

after the wine making process so you can be sure that wines from these regions

are ok. As with everything, start small and work your way into it. A member

posted some great recipes for SCD Mojitos, margaritas and strawberry daquairies.

You can search for mojito to find the recipes.

Misty Kimble

CD - no meds

SCD - 18 months

- I agree with all the advice to go slow. Pecanbread.com has broken the diet

down into stages. Nuts, beans, are more advanced foods.
