Hi - I posted a couple days ago about moving to the brace. Our

daughter is 9 weeks old and was born with bilateral cf. She

was casted 6 times at the University of Iowa by Dr. Ponseti. Her feet

look great! I'm worried though because when we put the

sandals on her heel does not stay all the way down. She has also

kicked her right sandal off twice. (her sock stayed in the sandal)

She does not have atypical feet. (at least we have not been told that

and I specifically asked Dr. Ponseti if she did.) I did talk to Dr.

Ponseti today and he said it should be fine and that over the next

few days we may be able to get her heels down better. When we stand

her in her bare feet her feet are completely flat on the floor. Her

heels do not lift off. Has anyone else had this experience? Does

anyone have any advice for using the sandals? They have been

wonderful to use other than not being able to get her heels flat.

has adjusted very well to the brace and does not seem

bothered by it. It is nice and light. Thanks in advance for any

advice and suggestions!!

HI,

I do not have any earth shattering advice. We have not had problems

keeping Sadie in her mithell brace but I 'll tell you what we do and

maybe something will help. We stretch her feet so they are flat (she

has atypical feet) and then put the shoe on, the center strap first,

then the one around her ankle and last the one over her toes.

hope this helps,

I can add a little to that. We DO have a problem getting Kai's heel

down all the way, so I buckle the middle strap snug but not tight,

then I buckle the ankle strap, the I grasp the bottom of the shoe and

dorsiflex the foot (push the toes up) until the heel drops down and

then tighten the middle strap and the ankle strap. Last I buckle the

bottom strap. I think I put the shoes on a bit tighter than

told us to, but otherwise Kai's heel wont stay down :) My husband

does it a bit different - he has Kai stand in the shoes while he

buckles them, but I think that would be hard with a very young baby ;)

Our now 4.5 month old has the shoes. They are the only ones

we have had since she went into shoes/dbb (at about 2 months of

age). In the beginning the shoes were a little big and it seemed

like her heels wouldn't go all the way down, just like you. But we

just put them on as far as they would go and hoped for the best.

Sometimes we'd have to put them on twice to get them to go down all

the way. As her feet grew, her feet seem to sit flatter, indeed

flat, in the shoe, and look good. We didn't have any slipping

problems, however. Did she have a tenotomy on that foot? If not,

maybe she needs one afterall? That would be a question for Dr.

Ponseti I suppose.

Questions to ask yourself:

Are you putting them (the shoes) on tight enough to keep them in?

Are you buckling in the middle strap first, then top, then bottom

strap? Since the straps are suede, they stretch. Perhaps yours

have, too, and you need to try buckling on a tighter notch?

Does she cry when you put them on? I found that Sophia's shoes went

on much better when she was relaxed, happy, content. I always try to

time putting the shoes back on when she's not too tired or hungry. I

always sing her a little song when we put them on. The entire length

of had a Little Lamb is a good choice as you can get them both

on in that time frame. May sound silly, but it has really worked for

us!

Hope this helps. We're off to Iowa this Thursday to see Dr. Ponseti

on Friday for Sophia's 3 month check up. Wish us luck and good luck

to you, too. I hope these shoes work for you!

Your dh knows how to put the shoes on? hehe... mine keeps telling me I'm

better at it and he doesn't know how. Occasionally I can get him to tie

one while I tie the other. Add this to the things he won't be able to do

when I die in the middle of the night and the baby screams for a couple of

hours before he wakes up and notices.

Kori

He does put the boys to bed while I put Darbs to bed, so he can do

something... with older children at least :~}

I just wanted to thank everyone that replied to my posting about the

sandals. It seems that it is getting easier to put 's

brace on now. Her feet seem to be a little more flexible and not

quite as sensitive as they were after we removed her last casts.

Since her feet are not as sensitive I feel better about dorsiflexing

her foot and getting her heel down as far as possible now. She has

not been able to kick off her brace, either. I took your advice Angel

and have been buckling the middle strap than the top strap and then

tightening the middle strap again. It seems to be working well. I

just hope I'm not buckling the straps too tight. Is there anyway to

know if the straps are too tight? It is hard with her having her

socks on. I think she would let me know if it was too tight. She is

tolerating the brace well.

Thanks again for all your suggestions and advice!! It is great to

have such an active support group!

She will definitely let you know if they are too tight. One night

about a week after we got them Kai kept waking up and was just

miserable and finally I realized he was kicking his feet and

whatnot ... he had been trying to sleep for hours and was so

exhausted. I decided to just remove the shoes. He was bawling when

I reached for the first strap. As soon as I loosened that middle

strap, he was out cold! I was able to buckle everything on nice and

snug and he sleps sound the rest of the night.
