Guest guest
This is crazy... According to the posting the Firefighter / Paramedic " Must be currently certified as both a Basic Firefighter through the Texas Commission on Fire Protection, and as a Paramedic through the Texas Department of State Health Services " yet the dispatcher does not have to have any certifications and makes more money??? And the Dog Catcher starts at $13.08 an hour with no certification... What is wrong with this picture???? Guest guest
WOW...guy's you are on a trip.. It has been a while since I have posted on any subject but this is the same old story. For those of you that have been in the business as long as I have OR MORE, this is nothing new. I first started in 80's and EMT's were making Min. wage. Today they are barely above that and still could qualify for some form of government assistance, esp if they have a family. I am not promoting any association but until our fellow EMS workers get feed up with this then it will never change.. Oh and the FD makes better pay because the city off sets that with their tax base..PLEASE.. If the elected folks gave a crap and the owners cared then they all could do they same thing. We have so many schools in this state, unlike nurses, that we have an abundt source. Economics 101 makes it clear as glass: Surplus supply = CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP wages... ________________________________ To: texasems-l Sent: Thursday, June 11, 2009 7:47:51 AM Subject: RE: Hiring in the DFW area Rob, I pay more than that for a medic with just 2 years of experience for part time out at TMS. Then throw in the fact that more than half the EMTs, Paramedics, and firemen in the country do the job for free, it's actually difficult to understand why so many agencies actually pay for us at all. Guest guest
Just my 2 cents., but it's not surplus. If you go back in history with some of us you find it was rare to fine one Paramedic in rural areas for to many reasons to mention. Now we are at a time where most services want to hire nothing but Paramedics. I remember a time you could only afford to hire 1 or 2 out of 50 if you could afford it. Hence EMTs where the bulk of the workforce and demand. Now that tide has changed which is good for the public, but bad for anyone just starting in EMS for a living. We also found Paramedics willing to work for EMT salaries since they were already working as an EMT, got their Paramedic and a 25 cent raise and stayed with the service for many more years and the I think you see the historical picture. The value of he EMT is vastly overlooked, and under used by to many EMS Providers. I tried to make the case a few years back about the Licensed Paramedic vs the Certified Paramedic on the argument of that was the path to increasing salaries. That in my opinion then and now was wrong. The path to increased salaries is that you start at the bottom of EMT and show the value of them and if you can do that, then those above them will automatically have to see a serious salary increase. History has proven me correct. Being correct does not satisfy an injustice. Ron RE: Hiring in the DFW area > http://www.cityofaz le.org/index. aspx?NID= 130 Holy Jeebus! Guest guest
Rob, I have been burned many times for advocating that as long as we have EMS folks Volunteering we will NEVER see the pay we deserve. You do not see Dr.s, Hospitals, and nurses volunteering 100% of the services. You also are slowly seeing more services calling themselves VOLUNTEERS finding away of getting paid $100 or more a run/call. That is a flaw by DSHS in the name of supporting what THEY have defined as a VOLUNTEER. Maxie you want or GETAC want to give some input here? I think it is warranted. Thanks, Ron Re: Hiring in the DFW area On Thursday, June 11, 2009 08:03, " Joby Berkley " joby@...> said: > We have so many schools in this state, unlike nurses, that we have an abundt > source. Guest guest
Just a little clarification here. The $11.00 an hour is for part-time. Not very much, but will probably be raised by one or two, maybe three dollars this budget year. We allow up to forty hours per week for part-time. No one is working for us part-time as a primary job. It’s not 17 an hour like some in our area, I know. The full time Firefighter/Paramedic is around $43, 200 starting annually plus incentive pay if applicable. We also have a step plan topping out at 10 years. It all depends on hours, automatic overtime (FLSA) etc. It’s not as bad as it appears.
