Guest guest
Hello, I am wondering where someone on there own needing resurf will have the easier time. Im not in a situation where I can get someone to accompany me for a resurf. as I am single and its out of town for my friends who are all working. I want to see either Dr. Gross or Dr. Mont I will have help when I get home. I live in the s.f. bay area, Calif . Also, how soon after the surgury can you fly, is the length of flight and transfers a big issue. thanks you for your advice. Guest guest
Steve---Obviously, those who have gone to Gross are going to tell you they had great care. Those who have gone to Mont will tell you they had great care. There are ratings out there on hospitals that can help you decide on that factor. To ask any patient who did best, you will get a biased answer: " because Dr ~~~ did my hip and the care was second to none... " One always holds allegiance (like Androcles' lion) to the surgeon who pulled the thorn from his proverbial paw. Besides, what does a patient do? Go to Gross for one and Mont for the other? We have nothing to compare our experience to. I had Mont do mine and I can answer you that I rode home in my car (with help) on Thursday after a Monday surgery. It was a two day trip of some 550 miles. A plane ride would be a cake walk. But they do offer rehab for a few days afterward and before taking a plane. And I'll bet what a difference a few days make. I would make the plug for Mont. The C+ has been around longer and is darned near approval. Mont has done more although that may change soon, he doesn't have a website marketing the device like Gross. Mont is more strict on post op than Gross. Being conservative has its merits. Mont uses staples, Gross internal sutures and steristrips. But you won't find my 7 inch scar very readily. You'll have to stare and embarass yourself, the staples don't matter after 2 years and I didn't have any puckers in the incision. I'm sure with Mont or Gross you will do well and soon be crowing about the good treatment. Guest guest
Steve: If you are flying out of town for your resurf solo, you might want to see who has non-stop flights from SanFran to either Baltimore or South Carolina (I forget which city Gross is located in..). This may sound like a tacky reason for selecting your surgeon (Both Docs are wonderful), but hay, it might make a difference. When I looked into it for myself, Baltimore was an easy 2 hour non-stop flight for me, while SC included changing planes and layover to the tune of 8 hours travel time. That helped my decision some... I flew SW. When your taxi or van driver delivers you to the airport, have him tell a SW (or any other airline) employee that you need wheelchair help. They will bring a wheelchair TO YOU and take you through screening, wait with you and help you do preboard. If you tell the person at the gate you need bulkhead (SW does not reserve seats, but other airlines do), you will no doubt get it. I had to have it, the walker I had could not fit down the airplane aisle! Upon landing tell them the same thing and you will get wheelchair help from the plane to your local transport. I had surgery on Thursday afternoon and flew out Sunday. I guess that is 4 days. However, my husband and daughter were with me. If traveling solo, I'd consider spending an extra few days if possible. Also, only take a small carry-on bag that will fit on your lap while in the wheelchair. Personally, I wore the hospital gown the whole time I was there...I was not in the mood to dress until I checked out. Hope this helps. Guest guest
, I had Dr. Gross perform my surgery. He is Columbia, SC. While I was there, another patient from Ohio was having both hips done. He was there alone due to the fact that they had just adopted an infant, so his wife stayed home with the baby. Anyway ... he flew in, had his surgeries, and flew back alone. And a bilat to boot! If you'd like to get in touch with him to find out what route he took, I can get you in touch with him. Most Gross patients leaving the hospital are on crutches, so you probably won't have to worry with a walker. You probably would need the bulkhead seat though so that you can stretch out as much as possible on the trip back. PS. Our scars are usually about 4 1/2 to 5 inches long. No staples. Fewer restrictions during post-op. No PT to speak of - they just give you some exercises to do on your own before and after a 6 week checkup. 7 mos post-op, I'm back to playing competitive singles tennis! It would be easier to get a flight to Baltimore, as Columbia, SC, altho a city and the capitol, (I believe), is not easy to get a direct flight to. You'd have to change planes somewhere, but that's not a huge deal. It might be a good idea anyway, as you need to get up and move around frequently (like every 20 minutes or so) to keep your blood moving. There was one man, Timmy T, who went solo to SC, had TWO hips done at the same time, had to walk up the plane's stairs to get to the plane (there aren't any jetways in Columbia), but he managed and did fine. You, however, may not want to put yourself through that. Your call. All airlines will treat you like royalty if you request a wheelchair, giving you prority seating times and door to door service. Be prepared to have to be wanded at the airport - I set the thing off every time. Even when leaving SC, 4 days after surgery, when they asked me if I could get out of the chair to be wanded, I proudly said yes, used my cane to get up, got wanded and was on my way! Remember to take all your meds before you go - all that movement makes the painkillers quite necessary. After surgery, I had been feeling so good that I hadn't been taking them - then when the 1 1/2 hour drive to the airport came around, I was very sorry I hadn't pre-medicated better. I didn't make that mistake the next day when flying. Either doc is wonderful. Both let you leave the hospital and fly after 4 days (sans complications with your surgery, of course) and both have had very numerous patients from out of town. Hope this helps! Guest guest
Best option for you will be JRI clinic in LA. They are the most exeperienced folks in resurfacing in US. > > I am wondering where someone on there own needing resurf will have > the > > easier time. > > Im not in a situation where I can get someone to accompany me for a > > resurf. > > as I am single and its out of town for my friends who are all > working. > > I want to see either Dr. Gross or Dr. Mont > > I will have help when I get home. > > I live in the s.f. bay area, Calif . > > Also, how soon after the surgury can you fly, > > is the length of flight and transfers a big issue. > > thanks you for your advice. > > Schreibman >

Guest guest
, I just returned from having the resurfacing done by Dr. Gross in SC. I had originally planned to go alone but at the last minute my brother was there from the procedure to the airport and a freind scheduled her one year follow-up for the day before I was discharged and we flew home together. Contrary to one of the other replies, both flights had jetways at Columbia. I also stayed at the Holiday Inn (Airport) which offered a shuttle from the airport and to the hospital. If I were to do it again, I would rent a car for time I was there before the surgery then take a cab from the hospital to the airport. The airport at Columbia is small which makes it easy to get from the curb to the departure gate. My only regret on the direct flight back to Detroit was not elevating my leg. Dr. Gross and his staff are great (as I'm sure Dr. Mont's are also). Guest guest
Hi Steve, The Columbia airport is small. They have some jetways, some not. I think it depends on the type of plane. I've been to Columbia 5 times (hip surgery, follow-ups, knee surgery) and only had a jetway once. On the non-jetway flights, it was the kind of airplane that has the steps (narrow) as a part of the door. It is doable on crutches although it looks a little scary. Guest guest
Steve, I had Bi-Lateral hip resurfacing via Dr. Gross last June. They did the RH Monday and the LH on Wed. I was released That Sunday am and on the plane @ 6:30am. Now I'm a Big ole boy and had my share of challenges, but nonetheless, I made it home in one piece to my wife and kids. The air lines should have no problem accomodating you after surgery if you let them know in advance of your situation. I travelled Delta that week. As for the staff and care while in SC. You have already heard the Great news of how they take care of us. Best wishes. Timmy T.
