Guest guest
Hello everyone, now that my appointment is set for November 25 -- I have some questions. First of all, the surgeon said that to prepare for surgery I should increase my dose of PTU to 400 mgs a day for 2 weeks before the surgery. When I went to see my endo he said, Oh no. . . you're levels are dangerously high for surgery and we have to start getting you euthyroid now. He also wants me to be on a beta blocker before the surgery. Who do I listen to? What has been your experience? Thank you again Carmel
Guest guest
Hi Carmel, If it were me, I would want my levels as close to euthyroid as possible before surgery. I don't see a conflict, both want you euthyroid, just the surgeon is more focused on the surgical requirement, your endo on your health. > He also wants me to be on a beta > blocker before the surgery. I switched from Carbimazole to betablockers about 10 days before surgery, my understanding was it made the thyroid flush out a bit.

Make that " use betablockers over the period of surgery " , and " stopping the ATD made the thyroid flesh out a bit " ... argh I know what I meant, I'm just not sure anyone reading it would. Guest guest
Hello Caroline,Thank you for you reply and a big congratulations to you! I am so happy for you -- you are my inspiration!! Sorry, I might not have worded my message incorrectly -- my endo wants to start me on 400 mgs PTU right away -- which I have. But, what about the beta blocker -- I don't have a racing heart or anything like that -- so do I need to take that before the surgery? When do I stop taking my ATDs? Will it be the night before the surgery? I can't wait to stop taking these pills! Take good care Caroline -- and have fun! Carmel

Mine had me go onto betablockers, and stop ATD, about 10 days before sticking the knife in, but your surgeon may have other plans for you! If you are unclear, far better to call up and say; " what was it again? and did you know my endo recommended I start the PTU already " , then turn up on the day and have your surgeon refuse to operate because you are too hypothyroid, or too hyperthyroid.
