Guest guest
Hi Kathleen, I was already almost 5'7 " when I first had symptoms as a young teen so I can't say my growth was stunted. On the other hand, my mother is 6 feet tall so who knows if I would have been taller if I did not have kidney disease. Can't say I look too young either for that matter :-) I guess I can't help prove your theory. In a message dated 5/24/2005 11:19:17 A.M. I developed kidney disease at the age of 9 and am now 31. My growth was stunted to a small degree from the condition, so I am on the small side and look about 10 years younger than I actually am. After meeting people this past month who also developed kidney disease during their childhood I noticed that many of them were also on the small side and looked younger than their actual age. Do you think there is a link? I actually find it is a bit of a curse at this stage in my life because it is difficult for people in the business world to take me seriously as I look so young. So I tend to educate myself more thouroughly and try to dress more professionally. Lots of people also think my husband is my father, he's only 3.5 years older than I am - poor guy. You can see a picture of us in the photo section of the site. So that's my theory, I'd like to know what you all think about it. Guest guest
Hi Kathleen, Growth is a recurrent issue on the nephkids site. Even without looking at renal disease, pred alone slows growth ( dropped from 95% to 50% on the growth charts during the first after post diagnosis). Renal disease seems to have it's own additional impact; many kidney parents report a huge growth spurt post transplant - despite all the immunosuppressants. In any event, I thought you looked fabulous! Guest guest
Hi Kathleen, I haven't a clue about this. I didn't develop kidney disease until later in life. Believe me though...when your 41 and look 31 - you'll be quite happy :-) Rita Kathleen wrote: This has been percolating in the back of my brain for awhile and I wanted to run it by you guys to see what your opinion is. Guest guest
Hi Kathleen, Unfortunately I can't really speak to your theory, as I was diagnosed with IgAN (and 100% kidney function at 19). And yet I am six feet tall - no mean feat when you are Chinese as well. However....I think you look really awesome. Nothing wrong with looking youthful - I am sure so many of us wish we were like you!! : ) Sophia > This has been percolating in the back of my brain for awhile and I > wanted to run it by you guys to see what your opinion is. > > I developed kidney disease at the age of 9 and am now 31. Guest guest
Thanks for weighing in on my theory, everyone. I do believe there is a connection and those who get kidney disease before they stop growing are affected by it with a smaller stature. Cy and Sophia, thanks for making me smile.
