Guest guest
here is an email we got from Dr. P a few month ago: " -After three months the child can be out of the brace about 6-8 hours a day. He should wear it at night and when he naps. Once he starts to walk, he should wear the brace about 12-14 hours a day. It is better to keep the shoes in 70 degrees of outward rotation. Your son will learn to crawl, pull up to stand, and may even learn to take a few steps in the brace. Guest guest
Some docs do it different, but the preference in my opinion is the way described by Holly. This is the one thing I adamantly do not agree with Dr Mosca on - he goes from 23/7 down to 10-12 per day and that has never sat right with me. I suppose he is doing what he can to get maximum cooperation from parents, but I still think he would do better to give them the numbers and then tell them the hours Dr Ponseti has set out. We chose to go by what Dr Ponseti said and that was that. Dr Mosca never diagreed with us and now for Kai at least he lets Dr Ponseti set the hours. Angel Marilouise - DBB Time Marilouise, In answer to your question about DBB time - Ponseti protocol is that after 23/7 the bar is worn 16-18 hours. Zach was not lowered to nights only (10-12 hours) until he was 2 years of age. Guest guest
Hi Idit, Nice to have the quote straight from Dr. P. Agress with the response from Holly. Since Oshri is pretty much the same age as , how is he doing developmentally wearing the DBB that many hours/day? Guest guest
Hi Angel, You are in agreement with Holly and Idit. Nice to know there is consistency (even though Dr. Mosca says different). How does Kai handle the long hours? He walks now correct? When did he start walking? Guest guest
Just to put your mind at east on the developmental front here are a few tidbits. Kai was cruising when he went back into casts at 9 months. Did not stop him. I have some cute photos of him cruising in the cast (toe-to-groin). He then went into the DBB for 16 hours a day and would stand in it. He still had sufficient time out each day to keep cruising around and he began walking on Christmas Eve, just before he turned 1. He went into knee length casts at 13 months and stayed in them until almost 15 months. He walked all around in them. Back in the DBB about 14-16 hrs per day (night and nap mostly) and now if he gets his brace on while he is awake he can cruise around in it - he doesnt have the ballance down yet to take steps without holding on, but holding on he does just fine - was doing it just last night, in fact. The DBB just doesnt slow them down at all! Angel Re: Marilouise - DBB Time Hi Angel, You are in agreement with Holly and Idit. Guest guest
Hello, Well, since Oshri has over flexibility he rolled both ways at 5.5 month with the shoes. But he started to bring him self to sitting only when he was 9 month old. We do some Feldenkrize classes and go to the swimming pool and it helps. He doses not crawl yet but sure trying! About 3 weeks ago we had a Forum meeting in Israel. There was one boy who started the Ponseti method when he was 6 month- after switching from the French method- he had 5 or 6 casts. Now he has to be 23 hours with the dbb for 3 month. The boy STOOD for the first time with the dbb after 2 weeks! (Almost 8 moth old) Amazing. I hear a lot about how the shoes do not interfere with these kind of development. BEST Idit, mom to Oshri, 25 August 03. Guest guest
Really? That's depressing, I was hoping Everett would go down to the 12 hours pretty soon but he's not even a year old yet. OK, we'll just have to follow dr. orders and keep plugging along! s. Marilouise, In answer to your question about DBB time - Ponseti protocol is that after 23/7 the bar is worn 16-18 hours. Guest guest
For myself, when we went from the 23 hours a day to the 18 hours a day - it was almost harder. Everett had so much fun ( and me too) with the bar off it killed me to put it back on after 6 hours of freedom. I think it's something parents need to be on guard for..... " Oh a couple more hours won't hurt " ..... know what I mean? It's all old hat nowdays though. I plan those 6 hours so if we're going to the lake or something I give him that time free instead of a rigid daily schedule. s. Guest guest
But remember each baby develops differently. The bar hasn't slowed Everett down a bit, your baby will do things when ready. s.
