Guest guest
I had 6 mo of chemo equaling 12 treatments. I didn't have a port but if I were to go through chemo again I think I would ask about one as my veins are hard to find. Guest guest
it's up to you - the a/c is especially hard on veins - the " a " part is a push - and sometimes it can cause tissue damage... marisa --- jcbalchan wrote: > I have good veins and I was wondering if it was > really necessary to > get a port put in if I only need 4 chemo treaments. > Thanks > > > __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Hi - I had chemo intravenously once every 3 weeks for 11 months. And there were all the blood tests associated with those sessions. And the injections associated with the scans. I have small veins; some nurses are really good at getting a needle in, but there was one who believed in " 3rd time lucky " ! Nobody offered me a port, and I never really wanted one. I used to shut my eyes when the needle went in, but during this long time I discovered that it doesn't hurt as much if you actually watch while they do it! I know what I'd decide in your place - no port - but you need to talk to the others as well and decide for yourself. Love, Margery. ============================================ margery@... in North Herts, UK ============================================ > has anyone not gotten a port for their Chemo > > I have good veins and I was wondering if it was really necessary to > get a port put in if I only need 4 chemo treaments. > Thanks > > > > > >
Guest guest
>Hi there. If you have decent veins (they haven't been destroyed by other chronic conditions or because you were a drug addict) then by all means avoid the port! (Especially for only 4 treatments!) As you can see from all the posts about porta caths on this site... they can be more hassle than they are worth! During placement of ports people can get a pneumothorax, people can have anesthesia problems during the port placement, and sometimes major blood vessels can be inadvertently torn (causing leakage of large amounts of blood). In addition, nerves can be hit by the needles and catheters during placement, causing lots of discomfort, pain, and anxiety. Plus, they need to be removed after the chemo is completed, and they can leave some scars. On the other hand, if you have lousy veins and already have problems just having your blood drawn, then sometimes its worth going through the expense, hassle, risks, and discomfort of getting the port. Good luck with this decision. I had the port placed because I had skinny, miney veins that the nurses always had trouble getting into. But if I had to do it over again I'm not sure I would have made the same decision. Best luck, Anne V. > I have good veins and I was wondering if it was really necessary to > get a port put in if I only need 4 chemo treaments. > Thanks >
Guest guest
I have a Groshen Port. I was totally against it initially, and mad that I had to have it done, but now I am SOOO glad I had it done. It's worth it.
