inducing labor at home

Hello, Ladies

I don't know if this has been discussed yet or not, but I had a few

suggestions from my cousin to induce labor at home. I was wondering

if any of you have tried this in the past? And if so, was it post

WLS? One suggestion is drinking castor oil (which I have also found

suggested on several websites) but I am nervous about how my post WLS

body will handle this. And the other suggestion she made was drinking

a tablespoon of balsamic vinegar, which I didn't find a whole lot of

info online about that. I am not quite that desperate yet to try any

of the above ideas, but in case I get to that point, I just wanted

some input from someone who's tried it, or maybe some other methods

you've used, and if they worked.

Thanks

Jeanette

I think the only thing you'll get by drinking castor oil is a long stay in the

bathroom. I tried that w/ my first and it didn't work.

Some feel that sex (males semen) and/or nipple stimulation are a good one for

inducing labor.

My feeling is labor (starting natural, not pharmacologically) will begin when

the body feels it is time.

Been doing all the above. Except the a lot of sex part. Just did that once. I

am NOT in " the mood " LOL. I am 1 1/2 centimeters as of this morning, finally.

But, he doesn't think I am going to go into labor for at least a few days,

because I haven't had any " bloody show " . Ugh. I am in so much pain from this

stupid sciatic nerve, I was hoping for better news today. LOL

Thanks for the input. :)

Unless your body (and baby) is ready for labor, nothing

- not even a full bells and whistles medical induction - is

likely to work.

however...if your body and baby are ready, castor oil is

a very effective (proven) method for induction. You're

right in that it's a pretty icky way to start off labor....but it

is effective nonetheless.

In response to your response to 's advice with the castor oil

(boy that was a mouthful), I feel (in my own opinion and personal

experience) that those of us who had gastric bypass shouldn't drink

oil of any kind because of the way our body absorbs things now after

surgery. Basically, you eat/drink grease/oil, I can dang near

guaruntee you will be pooping it too. So we shouldn't be suggesting

it as a means of induction when it could very well give us

the " runs " instead of inducing labor. Also too, we shouldn't decide

when it is time to induce, but rather our OB drs.

let's see....

I tried castor oil, mineral oil enemas, soap suds enemas, nipple

stimulation, having orgasms, intercourse so the prostaglandins in

the semen could ripen my cervix, I drank red zinger tea and

raspberry tea to stimulate contractions, I walked, did jumping jacks

and climbed stairs.....I'm sure theres more I am leaving out...lol

nothing worked....

then we decided on IV pitocin....

24 hours and MANY STRONG CONTRACTIONS later I was still pregnant and

dilated to a whopping 2!!!!!!!

Try as you might, when its time, its time....

*giggle*

Oh yes...it comes out the way it goes in. *wink*

but it does that for everyone. The reason castor oil

works is because it's not absorbed by the body and it

irritates the bowels.

doesn't work much different for a WLS person.

I would never suggest that anyone do any course of

action....as someone in the birth field, I could get into

big big trouble if I even got close to suggesting that

someone do something. I can't diagnose/prescribe

over the internet...oh no no no.

but I can give information.

And castor oil gives EVERYONE the runs.....that's how

it works. That's WHY it works.

Now this statement I disagree with. I do not think it's

my chosen care provider's decision whether or not I

should be induced...it's mine. My care provider offers

his/her opinion and suggestions...but it's ALWAYS my

decision. Always.

I don't know how you are referring to this statement. Are you saying

that YOU tell your DR or MW when THEY are going to induce YOU? The

Dr's here don't take too kindly to their patients telling them WHAT

and WHEN to do anything related to childbirth. Or are you saying

that you have had OB's tell you that they are going to induce you on

such and such date?? I didn't quite understand what you were

disagreeing with there. For repeat sections I can see the mother

having more of a say, since most OBs are flexible by inducing 1-2-

or even 3 weeks early.

what happened to the good old days when people just shut up and

stayed pregnant until their water broke on its OWN or the

contractions started on their OWN???

Induction, induction, induction.... that's just about all I see

anymore and I feel (personally MHO) that it's just for the MW or

OB's *convenience*.

I wish I had a dime for every pregnant woman who came to the

hospital just because she was TOP and wanted to be *induced*

(TOP- tired of pregnancy) then get upset with the staff b'c her baby

was born at 36 weeks and had to go to NICU for a week or two.

lol

sheila

(now keep in mind, when I was pregnant last year... I was the one

crying and whining around to my OB that I wanted to be induced at

each of the last 4 dr's appointments...LOL)

Well...yes.

Or, more accurately....I tell them when they aren't going

to induce me. If I don't feel that I should be induced and

I do not desire to be induced......I won't be induced.

>The

really?

And where I am, the doctors appreciate informed

patients and want them to be active participants in their

births...

and, frankly, if there was a doctor that didn't take too

kindly to me telling them what and when things were

going to happen to my body....then I wouldn't take too

kindly to paying them to be my primary care provider.

I'm saying that just because a care provider suggests

that you induce doesn't mean it's a requirement...it's

always up to the mother whether she agrees to an

induction or not.

Many times it is...

Heh...

yeah, I've seen that, too.

But more often I've seen doctors wanting to induce and

the moms trying to figure out how to avoid a medically

unnecessary induction.

nope, not here. Out of 30 OBGYN's, perhaps 2 or 3 (if that many)

*schedule* inductions for " convenience " otherwise it's wait wait
