Ron, there is probably nothing you cna do about your wifes plan, but how long have you had your Medicare. Right now is a very good time to get a supplemental insurance-- because with the Medicare Part D thing, you'll have to be picking one for your meds. It may be possible that they'll allow open enrollment in Medicare supplemental insurance also. Income wise, do you qualify for Medicare/Medicaid? It may be possible that since you're permanently disabled, blind, pretty much deaf, that you would qualify with extentuating circumstances. Medicare is Federal, MediCaid is State subsidized. If you qualify, then you would have your Medicare monthly premiums waived, your deductibles waived, and the Part D deductibles, premiums, and copays waived. Check with your local Dept of Health and Human resources people. They will have social workers that can guide you thru the process. Also, look into getting ahold of several of the companies in your Medicare book that was sent out this last month. In the back where they list the names of companies that are offering drug coverage- you might be able to find one that will take you on. When we first get Medicare, we have 6 months to apply for MediGap insurance (the secondary payer) so if you've just been approved, you may still be in that time frame where they can't deny any pre-existing condition. Guest guest
If you had your neurosarcoid diagnosis prior and the responsibilities to keep up on the insurance papers was yours, the insurance company should have provided an advocate to help with the paperwork. It is an argument that you can bring to the attention to your state health department, insurances examiner, department of social services etc. it’s a starting point. Good luck. Guest guest
Well, Ron, as you might remember, I lost my COBRA a year ago because I forgot to pay the premium. My appeals were denied, even with letters from my neuro, pulmo & Baughman about my memory problems. I will be eligible for Medicare in 2/06, and it's looking pretty good to me after a year of no health coverage at all! I'm just overwhelmed about the drug program & trying to figure out which one to pick. You might check on an appeal; go past the first couple of levels though, because they will probably just spout what they've been told, which might be incorrect. That's what happened in my case & I took their word. Later I found out that I could have gotten my COBRA reinstated, but that window of opportunity had closed by the time I found out it even existed! I appealed again based on being given incorrect info, but was again denied, and I just don't have the energy to put into finding an attorney or whatever & fighting anymore. Good luck to you though.
